Panic Disorder is a condition of recurring anxiety attacks that affects 1 out of 10 people. It is believed that a combination of heredity, psychological factors & environment result is panic disorder. Panic disorder is NOT a "weakness of character" or "something in your mind". It's a disease like diabetes or high blood pressure. The difference between these conditions involves
panic disorder having predominantly psychological symptoms & thus a classification as a mental disorder. Panic disorder is a very treatable condition. More than 80% of sufferers respond to treatment. Non-psychiatric conditions, such as alcohol consumptions, thyroid disorders, & diabetes can cause panic attacks. Heavy exercise, caffeine, tobacco, & hyperventilation can also cause panic attacks. If physical factors are absent, & without another psychiatric condition such as depression, a diagnosis of panic disorder can be made. You have a disease - don't feel inferior or ashamed. You can no more help the fact that you suffer from panic disorder than a diabetic can help it that their body doesn't make enough insulin! Check with your doctor! Get tested for thyroid disorders & diabetes. Your problem could be physical! If the physiological tests are negative, discuss medication options & counseling. Find a support group, they can be very helpful. You are not alone! I have sufferred with multiple psychiatric disorders, including panic disorder for many years. With counseling & medication, I have a good & productive life. I seldom have panic attacks now, but when I do, I recognize it for what it is. I have learned many relaxation techniques that are helpful & I also take an anti-anxiety drug. Now, I can help myself to control my panic, rather than my panic controlling me! Knowledge is power! Do research on your disorder, learn everything you can about it! This knowledge will enable you to help yourself! You have a disease that is treatable! Accept it & DO NOT let anyone make you feel ashamed or embarrassed about your disorder. Ignorance breeds contempt, so you might try educating people about Panic Disorder, help them to understand it rather than be fearful & contemptuous of we that have this disorder! Sometimes, being an advocate & educator of Mental Illness is the very best medicine! Much Good Luck to You!! You will do just fine!

Don't feel inferior-everybody either has or had some kind of mental problem or has someone in their family who does. It's more common than you think-even cops get depression and paramedics, nurses and doctors too-just think about the human suffering they have to see. The medical professionals are better at hardening themselves towards it but the cops, surprisingly enough are really bothered by it. As far as panic disorders go your family doctor can prescribe something like paxil and one little pill a couple times a day and its like you never had it -so relax.

"Mental conditions" are caused by chemicals in your brain. Because of this, they are physiological, but they manifest themselves behaviorally. One of my doctors called my condition a brain disorder. Blaming an organ in my body removed any stigma I had. I wouldn't blame myself if my kidneys stopped working, so why should I blame my self when my brain doesn't work the right way? Medication together with cognitive therapy is a pretty successful treatment for allot of people. It can help you think objectivly when panic sets in and eventually, it will lessen or not even occur.

It can be.. but with medication you will never have to feel it again.

I do not feel inferior because of it in any way. Everybody is nuts, it is just that I do something about it.
