Use white icing, and then squirt in some different colored stuff, like what is use for the borders and for the writing because it is of a different consistency, and then just don't stir it but for a few strokes and see what you get.

Use a plain coloured icing, put it on the cake, a little thicker than usual. Put some dots of different coloured die around the cake, and when done, use a tooth pick or skewer, and gently drag the dye colours around the cake to get a swirl tie-dyed effect. Try mixing one colour line through another and see the effect.
