Well if its a long road trip, I would definitely suggest more than likely a mid 90's import sedan such as a Corolla or an Accord. Now don't get me wrong, I have always bought American, but the reason why I choose those cars is mainly due to not only the great history of dependibility, but also due to their great MPG.
The most important thing when looking for a dependable car is NOT what kind of car it is, but looking for tell tail signs of problems that the seller or dealer is trying to hide from you.
If you are not well versed with cars, then you should definitely take someone who is shopping with you. They will be able to tell whether a car has been into an accident, tell how well the car has been handled, and also be able to tell if anything is wrong with the car whether it be engine or transmission related.
After picking and buying your car, you should definitely change all of your fluids before going on the huge road trip. Nothing hurts more than a blown engine 500 miles away from your house because the oil was too low or the coolant had a small leak!

A used Toyota... Hyundai/Kia aren't known for reliability. I have a '91 Camry with 184,000 miles and I could almost swear that all it needs is an oil change every 3000 miles. Although you don't have to get a 91 like I did, my 99 Solara does very good and I got it for a good price.

Huyndai was just rated #3 in quality by JD Power (Porsche and Lexus were numbers 1&2). I think you can get a Huyndai Accent for around 10 grand.

I’m in the car business, and my #1 seller is by far the Honda Accord. Reliable, good fuel economy, and they are a breeze to work on as well.
