if you want something that doesnt need heaps of attention. get a cat. they are fiesty and indepentent. Dogs need a lot of love and attention and are naturally attention-seekers.

You know if I was looking for a dog like you are and are not sure which breed to get I would have a trip down to my local dog rescue center and tell them what you are looking for. I bet you will just be wanting to take them all home as most dogs will be there through no fault of their own.
Perhaps consider an older dog who will already be house trained and not chew everything in its path. One you can leave at home when you go shopping and it wont upset the neighbors with its constant barking.
I bet if you tell the rescue people what you want they will have the right dog for you, he will just be delighted to have a loving home and will not cost as much to buy as a pedigree. He will probably be neutered and vaccinated and all you have to do is feed and walk him and give him some love.
Hope this is helpful.

All dogs need attention but some less than others. Greyhounds are laid back and don't demmand too much. Small smooth coated terriers are ok too but need to be brought up from a puppy if there are children in the family.
Almost any dog can be adjusted to your lifestle if you do it properly. I have 4 springer spaniels and a rottweiler and I can take them into any situation or family and have full confidence in them.

i would suggest any very short haired dog. the breed of my choice is a french bulldog. you usually don't see too many of them around, but they are wonderful animals.

the frenchie breed was first used as a butchers guard dog. it has no bite, it just wants love and play. also the frenchies aint to awfuly big. the biggest they might get is 40 lbs at the most. and the tallest they get is somewhere right at the knee and below.

another good thing about the frenchies is far as i know they don't bark and whine like a chiuwa or yorkie would.

border collies are nice, most mutts are good. small dogs tend to be biters around children and large dogs need a lot of care, food, and poop scooping. Best breed might be cocker spaniel, fairly small, very loyal, trainable, not nippers or biters usually. only drawback is curly hair that should be combed out at least once a year or cut at least once a year. check the ears often, the hair tangles, but is easily teased out during petting.

I have owned tons of animals in my days. I presently have a Portuguese Water Dog. He doesn't shed, require attention, is well balanced, doesn't smell when he goes out in the heat and is soft pawed.(Doesn't hurt if he steps on ya). And, oh, has the most expressive facial expressions I have ever seen. I have him in a short puppy cut, not the lion cut. Easy to train and his sitters fight to see who gets to keep him when I leave town. They are expensive but the cash up front has been worth it. There are days I ask him to bring me my checkbook so I can send the breeder another check coz I feel she under charged me. I will give you my breeders name if you are intereted and send you pics of him. Labrodoodles are the same. Don't fall for that one. Most do shed. PWD's do not. I can have a white shirt on, have him in my lap, get up and can not find one single black hair. It's truly amazing. Mines small and is about the size of a cocker. I also have a Yorkie. They are both good.

Any dog can be good for a family just as long as it is trained correctly and knows its place in the pack.

Small dogs tend to be biter so would be wary of them with children.

I was brought up with Labradors and Retrievers, springer spaniels and cocker spaniels. They all make good pets. The children can spend hours throwing things for the dogs to retrieve!!!

The local rescue centre may have some so why not pay them a visit?

Good luck in your hunt

The Maltese is a smart, beautiful and superior dog, however, they require attention because they give a lot of love and require love in return. No need to keep their hair very long. Our little girl has a puppy cut and she is still beautiful. What a face!!!!

I would say a Maine Coon cat. They get pretty big, like a small dog. They don't have the attitude like a cat. They are more relaxed. They are happy to be around you, and not on top of you.

Go here and fill out the Breed Selector questionaire and see what breeds it recommends. Be sure to be honest and answer additional questions when it asks. The more you answer the more accurate it will be.
