I am a disabled mom living on less than $800 a month, half of which is my rent. There aren't many places in my small town that can help me out and I am in jeopardy of loosing several basic utilities. Any idea where I might find some help with this situation?

My suggestion is to begin with your local utility companies. Each company provides reduced rates for those with reduced incomes.

Next contact your local welfare services though they may not be able to assist you because your income is too high they usually have a list of local altenatives.

Contact your church they usually have program that can assist with food needs such as food CUPBOARD program which gives you emergency food provisions or SHARE program for $15 or $30 will provide you with twice that amount in food.

Seach the web for volunteer programs that may be able to assist things such as clothing food even utilies.

Check your local yellow pages for social organizations...... it is amazing how many provide services like transportaion, food, medical assistance, vouchers for clothing, and utlities.

I wish you the best, God bless you and your Mom.

Phone companies now have programs that will give you the basic phone for $1 dollar. Electric and Gas companies have programs. Your local Health and Social Service agency has programs such as Adult Public Assistance that can help until your disability kicks in. Just don't be shy to ask for help.

Most utility companies have a program to help out for at least one payment.

Also, check with your local church. They typically have programs, also.

If you live in California, go to your nearest EDD. they have several programs that could help out people in need. I don't know about other states though. I'd assume they would have their own equivalent.

If you are disabled, please go to your county social services department and let a social worker help you with services that are available, rent assistance, food stamps, etc. Also, catholic services is very helpful.
