Two things:

Ammo availability - the XD45 fires .45ACP cartridges. It's probably one of the top 5 most popular pistol calibers in the world. No risk of it disappearing.

Reliability - the Springfield XD is a rebranded HS2000. While the HS2000 never was available in .45ACP, the 9mm and .40S&W versions have been around for a long time with a good track record.

I shot an XD45 a couple of weeks ago and was pretty impressed at how it performed. The gun I shot was brand new, just out of the box. I gave it a once-over with some oil, cleaned the bore, and sent about 200 rounds downrange without a hiccup. I'm not a fan of plastic guns, but this one was pretty decent.

I hope you are talking about the Springfiled XD. I have a XD in .40 cal. I wouldn't give it up for the world. The action is smoth plenty of power and the sight are cant miss. I have had mine for 2 1/2 years and it has never let me down. I've tried to make it misfire and jam but it's just like my Glock 45acp, it wont jam. By all means this gun is cheaper than a glock but just as reliable.

I have read some reviews that don't like the grip feel, and others worried about the long term availablity of the ammo..

If I am carrying one for protection, I would prefer one that is more tried and tested.
