Protestant denominations use bread and wine as symbols in their celebrations of the eucharist.

If you want to know about Catholic beliefs about the Eucharist, you may want to check out "The Lamb's Supper" by Scott Haun. Mr. Haun is a wonderful writer who was a Protestant leader and critical of the Catholic Church before his deep research in the early history of the Catholic Church. As far as the Eucharist, Catholics believe in the the literal meaning of the Gospel of John. Catholics believe that Jesus instituted the sacrament of the Eucharist and through the mystery of transubstantiation Catholics partake of the body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Eucharist is a mystery. Faith is a gift from God.

You might want to check out the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Also, you may want to check out stories and videos of saints and mystics whose devotion to the Eucharist resulted in miracles and unexplained healings. Padre Pio and Sister Marie Faustina of Poland are two 20th Century mystics that you might want to check out. Bob and Penny Lord have some great videos focusing on the lives of many saints devoted to the Eucharist. May God bless you!

If you are really interested there is s good book called "The two Babylons," which tells you about how the Roman Catholic church came to get all its symbols and actions.
But basically the religion takes its rituals from the Chaldean priesthood in ancient Babylon. The Eucharist that they say is their "god" comes from the Babylonian sun god. They used to have a circular piece of bread (or wafer) and hold it up in front of the people and told the people that this was the sun god, then everyone bowed down to this piece of bread.
A good site to visit on how to make yourself rich and powerful and get people to bow down to a piece of toast that you have called god, is Chick publications. Look up the tract, "The death cookie." It makes you wonder why people do not question what they are doing, and why they don't read the Bible to get the truth.

Do you mean like the wafer and chalise (sp). Catholics believe that the wafers and wine actually become the physical body and blood of Christ once the Priest prays over them and they ingest/ eat them in rememberance of Christ. And for Catholics it's one of the 7 holy sacraments. Catholics celebrate the Eiucharist at every Mass but only Catholics can participate.

Protestants usually actually break bread, like off of a loaf and have little cups of grape juice and believe it's a symbolic act of the last supper (ie Jesus said "Do this in rememberance of me). And Protestant churches do this on a very in frequent basis compared to Catholics.
