The plasma HDTVs can last for over 10 years as long as you use it responsibly. Don't keep a still picture on the screen for long periods of time (such as idle video games, DVD menus, computer desktops, etc) this will damage the phosphor and shorten the lifespan. Heat is the big killer of any electronic device. So when you are not watching it, turn it off. They are called plasma because the picture is illuminated by firing the individual pixels when the gases in the cells directly attached to each pixel is ionized (put in a state called plasma). You will never ever have to recharge the plasma.

I checked into this last year and found that LCD tv's are better as far as maintenance and longevity are concerned.
On average the plasma gas will need to be recharged about every 5 years. I don't know the cost of this process or what is involved.
The LCD's have a light bulb that needs replacing after so many hundred hours of viewing. This should average about 5 years also. The bulb is about $250 and I was told that I could probably do this myself.
Ask the dealers in your area, research the internet and make the best decision for you.
