Tawny Port is a type of Port. You have White port, Tawny port, LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) Port and then Vintage port available to purchase. Tawny ports are a blend of different years and are generally a light brown, honey colour. White port is white in colour and then LBV and Vintage are different shades of Red. Only Vintage ports are from a specific year and the other three are a blend of different years.
Finally, in order to be called Port, it has to be from Portugal. Anything else has to be called "Port Style Wine".

A port wine can be made from many different grapes, but it will always be produced in Portugal- wines can only be called "ports" if they are from Portugal. Ports will be full-flavored, dark red, and all the grapes that go into the wine were harvested during the same year.
Tawny is usually a blended wine. Often, red and white wines are blended, so the end result is a much lighter colored wine. You can tell a tawny port from a port wine instantly- the lighter of the two will always be the tawny.
Tawny ports are usually a little lighter bodied and flavored. I recommend them to people who are not used to drinking port wines- they tend to be a little easier to swallow. Both go well with deserts, but ports are great with chocolate and heavy, syrupy deserts, and tawnys are better for frutier deserts, like tarts, or puddings.
