Between Gnostics and Agnostics?

2006-07-01 21:09:39 · 13 answers · asked by Tiffany G 2 in Society & Culture Religion & Spirituality

Thank you to all who gave real answers to the question and not sarcastic remarks.
To the one who said both groups were going to hell - maybe you should take the advise given by David G497. No one decides who goes to hell but God.... and if they don't believe in a god...why would it concern them either way?

Gnostics are a religous sect of Christianity from the 2nd century on, see the Nag Hammadi Library, these are Christian Gnostic Books. Gnosis = Knowledge. Gnostics don't believe in God as Christians at large do, they believe God is NOT all that nice a being and the only way to attain enlightenment is not through salvation through Christ but through Knowledge.

Gnostic comes from the Greek word "gnosis" or knowlegde. There were some pre-christian and early christian groups who believed that all of the material world was evil but with the application of knowledge you could rise above. An agnostic is a person who may or may not believe (or have knowledge) of God but does not have a practice of faith. The term comes from the idea that if god is perfect then why try to be like him because we'll never be perfect.

Gnostics were an early Christian Sect considered heretical. They claimed to have a 'secret knowledge of Christ.' The word is derived from 'knowledge.'

An Agnostic claims that here is no way to know for sure if God exists.

Crude explanation for sure, but I hope it helps.

Gnostics believe in hell and are headed there. Agnostics don't believe in hell and are headed there.

Agnostics "don't know"; Gnostics "know".

There are many kinds of gnostics. I happen to be a Nassenne/Ophite gnostic [Serpent Worshipers].

What they know is not like "Paris is in France", rather it's more like "Jane loves ice-cream."

Agnostics believe that it is impossible to know whether or not there is a god.

Gnostics believe in some kind of transcendent mental experience that gets them in touch with god.

Gnostics were one of the sects that the Catholic Church tried to stamp out. They are a Christian group. Agnotics are non-religious, free thinkers. No connection
