I have a St. Bernard from the SPCA. She is sweet, gentle, house broken, and won't even harm my cat. They found her underfed playing in a cow farm. Even if someone lost her, don't you think you would search for her and at least check the SPCA?

Not to mention that after one visit to my mother's house, a few months later we went back and she ran right to the front door, so I don't believe she would have gotten lost easily.

People abandon pets for many reasons.
Maybe it's a married couple with a brand new puppy who is excpecting a child soon. And in that way, the doctors say that the baby might be allergic.
Cold-hearted.
Maybe it's a plain non-married couple who had gotten a new house and decided to get a four year old dog. Then a couple weeks later, they're splitting and neither wants the dog.
Selfishness.
Maybe it's someone who had lived in a house, but then plans were changed and now they have to live in an apartment.
Cold-hearted.

I truely believe that once you get a pet, that they're entitled to be a family member and whatever happens, you must carry the pet.
Y'see, you just /can't/ get rid if a family member, can you?

A lot a people go out and get a pet on a whim and do not understand the commitment they are making. These people usually view their pets as property and not family members. I honestly think that people who abandon their pets are immature, irresponsible and selfish. Frankly, the type of person to ditch a pet wouldn't think twice about ditching a child either.

I myself have rescued a victim of such cruelty. Pumpkin, my cat crossed my path as a thin, ear mite infested stray kitten. He's adjusted well considering his previous life before me.

My cats are like my children. Some people would consider me crazy, but I'd take a bullet for Pumpkin. God help the fool that would even think about harming my sweet kitty. It would be ugly.

The people who owned her before you didn't deserve her love and companionship. Your are right, if she had been accidental lost, someone would have at least checked with the local SPCA. Or better yet, had her V-Chipped and tagged.

I commend you for getting a rescue instead of running out and buying one from a puppy mill. You saved a life. You did a great thing. I wouldn't worry about her past too much. Just love and take care of her and she will continue to thrive.

Isn't it amazing that us humans consider ourselves to be much more superior in intelligence and reasoning factors than those lesser creatures none as animals. And yet animals, hardly ever abandon one of their own because they find that they no longer have use of a particular member of their species. Humans could learn alot from animals. Animals have instincts, humans have egos. The SPCA does a wonderful job! My hat's off to you for adopting your St. Bernard from them.

There is not one single good reason, to ever abandon a pet. All pets ask of us, is to Love them and some food and water. A pet returns that love with life long devotion and friendship. Anyone who would abandon a pet, is either not in there right mind, or incredibility cruel. There is nothing better than a pet.

You know, some of the questions in here just amaze me. For goodness sakes, don't you own a freakin' TV?? Young kids in Asian countries are introduced into prostitution at age 3 and 4. Once we shut down the sweat shops where kids were making clothes. What makes you think people care about a dang dog. Kids in OUR country are sexually abused, pimped out by their mothers, burned with cigarettes and staved and beaten to death and sold for crack cocaine. For God's sake, please turn on your evening news tonite right after you have a buddy help pull your head out of your ***.

Pets are annoying, unsanitary, and just a whole lot of work. If a person doesn't feel any affection for said beast, and has no moral qualms or fears of social ostracization, of course they'll abandon it.
