For much of this century the term Victorian, which literally describes things and events in the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), conveyed connotations of "prudish," "repressed," and "old fashioned." Although such associations have some basis in fact, they do not adequately indicate the nature of this complex, paradoxical age that was a second English Renaissance. Like Elizabethan England, Victorian England saw great expansion of wealth, power, and culture. (What Victorian literary form do you think parallels Elizabethan drama in terms of both popularity and literary achievement?)

I do Quilling which in the victorian times was one of the fine arts the girls had to learn. It got it's name because they used bird quills to roll strips of paper to decorate everything. You can put quilling in your search engine to see the modern day that we do now and at www.quilling.com they have a book which shows the history of it along with the pictures of musuem pieces which have survived. They also did petit point, embrodery, and sewing.

I'm not sure where to go (because the web sites I access are through universities requiring passwords) but my favorite artist and illustrator of that time period is Gustave Dore. Fabulous!
