When I put on my computer then i get the message:
GRUB checking ( I think)
Error 17
After that nothing happens. Loks like I will have to reformat the hard disk and load my operating system again. But how do I go about this?

Windows XP alhtough I had partitioned the harddislk and loaded linux ( Ubuntu) as well..

If you have the Windows XP installation disk, then it's rather simple. Startup the computer with the CD in the drive (you may need to change the boot order of your drives to have the CD drive first). Follow the instructions to reformat the drive and install XP.

LINUX CRASHING? shhocking.
but OS cashes are not always a bad thing. my computer wouldnt have been upgraded out of the stone age if it didnt crash offen
and it gives your computer a fresh start too (^_^)
