The pros indicate you are protected (from most people) the cons are; you will be living at a much reduced level of function... actually restricting your life. It would behoove you to determine why you feel this to be necessary and then work to eliminate the problems which cause you to want to build that wall. You are the real loser in this instance. That wall will prevent you from being all you feel you can be.

Well first the cons:

You have a difficult time making and keeping friends.

You can come accross as untrustworthy.

Over time you can become paranoid and might become a very lonely person.

Pros:

You won't be hurt by others. They can't hurt what the cannot access.

You are able to observe society much easier without distraction.

If you are a loner type person, you will definatly have your alone time.

Now the second part of your question:

I believe yes, it can be different for boys and girls.

Girls, for the most part, thrive on emotional bonding with others, while guys many times do not.

But one could argue differently:

Both males and females need emotional bonding with others, just that guys keep that inside and to themselves and girls share their emotional desires.

There really is no yes/no answer and much is subjective.

I was hurt by a bad relationship a long time ago, and since them I have built an emotional wall. Sometimes I am greatfull for it while other times I feel cursed having it.

Pros - Nothing will ever get close enough to hurt you again.

Cons - Nothing will ever get close to you again. Love, kindness, something as simple as a hug from your niece or nephew won't get through. The sad part is that after a while the people that love you will stop trying to get through, assuming that this is the way you want to live your life. Then when the ice you've built around your heart finally melts, how do you get those people back?

For someone to want to build an emotional wall around them self their trust must have taken a beating. I'm sorry. Trust is one of those things that is freely given, but once lost has to be earned back. Don't make the rest of the people in your life earn it back.

Pro: you are safe inside that wall and no one can hurt you except yourself.
Con: your life will pass you by and you will miss it all.
No difference for boys or girls. Figure out why you think you need to build a wall like that and don't do it......deal with whatever your issues are, no matter how tough it seems. Being behind that wall is safe, but not healthy and boring as hell.

Pros: no emotional sensitivity, no intruders, a feeling of safeness, the appearance of control

Cons: no love, no secrets, no confidants, no bonds, no excitement, constant feeling of lonliness, feeling of drowning in your problems, anxiety, unhappiness

I think that not only does it matter between male and female, but also the age and the subjects social environment, different things affect the emotions that run the highest in us throughout our lives, causing different emotions to matter in different ways and to different degrees. As we change so does our wall.

The pros are only for your advantage. You don't get hurt. Nobody knows how you feel.
The cons affect other people too. You can't make a close relationship with someone. You are sort of isolating yourself from the world.

Any gender, building a wall is like being dead. Everyone NEEDS life. They need social exposure, musical/ visual stimulation. Experience good and bad. That is what life is all about.
I do not see any pros about it. It would be a lonely place.
