The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (www.spywareblaster.com)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have counteless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be tought in schools)

Most of the above suggestions are great, but you really should stay away from Norton. While I wouldn't call it evil, it definitely does not work well. I can cause your computer to have problems, and is well known to not find viruses or not tell you when it can't fix one.

McAfee is OK, but it can have it's own issues. I usually recommend Avast, AVG, Anti-VIR, eTrust EZ antivirus, and Zone Alarm is also good.

Just stay away from Norton and you should be fine.

free or paid? take your pick:
avg, antivir, etrust, zonealarm, nod32

i use nod32 (it's a paid program but well worth it), which is much better than norton and mcafee as it updates more often and does not hog resources or give you false positives. it also doesnt tell you that youve got a virus and then refuse to clean it... like norton does.

you could always ask the advice from professionals, try the following sites listed in my sources.

Kaspersky if you hear me. I've tried McAfee, Norton, Avast, Zone Alarm, but none of them are the best, Kaspersky is the most powerful one I think, others can't cath some of viruses or trojans but this one certainly can.
