In many respects, Linux is better than Windows - but it is NOT windows. It will not run windows programs without an emulator and that emulator won't run everything.

Linux is to Windows as a Jet Engine is to a Car Engine - they are the same in that they are both engines, but they both work quite differently.

Compared to Windows 98, Linux is MUCH better. Compare to Windows XP/NT/2000, Linux is debateably better - but still an excellent system.

Why not get a live distro - one that boots off CD and does not need to be installed. When you want to run Linux, you boot to the CD, when you want to run Windows, you boot to the hard disk and windows.

Three good live distros you could try:
Knoppix - www.knoppix.net
Suse - http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/downloads/suse_linux/index.html
Ubuntu - http://www.ubuntu.com/download
(there are MANY others as well)

A very good write-up on Linux vs. Windows:

Linux is a great. I love it.

But Linux is not for everyone. There's quite a learning curve involved in switching from a Windows system to Linux, and considering you're still on Win 98 (and therefore might not have seen any reason to upgrade in the recent past), it might not be for you.

Live CDs are your best way to test out whether you're comfortable with Linux. A good starter distro would be Knoppix, and even better, Ubuntu, as the latter has both Live and Install versions in case you do want to switch.

It's certainly worth a try, and you will enjoy the fact that most commonly used applications (Office applications, Internet and Email, Games, etc.) are pre-installed. If you want to add anything, that's where some experimentation, experience, and lots of reading come in handy.

The operating system or OS is really up to you. Linux is a great OS but it all boils down to the user. If you have zero knowledge on linux it might not be a good idea to shift right awy specially if you have some computer back logs on your scheds. Windows 98 is really outdated nowadays but you might also consider that it is not that easy to find drivers for linux and programs that you will need. I think windows has better overall compatability and support.

i'd say Ubuntu, that is totally user-friendly to apply for a beginner, besides the undeniable fact that it nonetheless has the potential to do very greater issues also GNOME is a pc ecosystem, like KDE. Ubuntu comes with GNOME. in case you desire a extra homestead windows-like ecosystem you should apply Kubuntu that's Ubuntu with the KDE ecosystem particularly than GNOME. a strong element with Ubuntu is that you'll replace between the variations very somewhat, merely utilizing synaptic equipment manager (a application you'll use plenty in case you get Ubuntu or Debian) you could replace laptop environments and upload the positive homes of each and every version with very few clicks. also Ubuntu is depending off debian, so that they are similar yet ubuntu is designed to be extra elementary.

Download SimplyMepis it is a live CD so you don't have to install it. Burn to CDR and reboot your computer then use it. It will run slower from cd then your Hard Drive. The user interface is similar to Windows.
