There are many factors involved in diagnosis and treatment planning for implants, so it is dangerous to try to give a "pat" answer, but generally speaking, they are safe. There are medical conditions that would contraindicate getting an implant and you need to have a thorough discussion about this with your dentist.

Gee... You DID mean dental implants, didn't you? This is the dental section.

They are certainly safe if done by experienced implantologist whose bonafides have been thoroughly checked. Many dentists are jumping on this bandwagon for easy money. Check their credentials as well as under whose umbrella they are working under. I have learnt a bitter lesson.

Prompted by a TV programme on British TV (ITV) I contacted a well known Hospital and went to India Delhi with a view to get several implants as well crowns done on them. In the first instance (1) their original estimates were 1/10 of their subsequent demand, 2. list of real charges was presented to me after I had been under the 'knife' of the 'implantologist' for 3 days, 3. quality of the implant system used was not of standard normally used by implantologist of repute and 4. other related work of bone grafting and bridge work was found to be deffective and useless.

A subsequent date was fixed to carry on the work after 6 months. The dentist concerned, instead, chose to go for a Conference to London. Leaving my high and dry in Delhi thus causing me a loss of thousands of pounds.

I have chosen to restart the whole treatment with a Clinic in Eastern Europe.

Moral: Chose some one with proven credential
