Very nice question.

There are some determining factors in Islam to ascertain a person as a prophet. I don't know all of them, but I will try to give some important points:

To justify a person as a true prophet, we ask:
1. Is the person's birth date & family tree clearly known?
2. Was he born in noble family?
3. Was he born in the lineage of a former prophet?
4. Did he receive any divine revelation? If yes, does it still exist?
5. Did he preach religious teachings?
6. Did he perform any miracles?
7. Did his teachings conform with former prophets' teachings?
8. Did he accept former prophets?
9. Was he a man of noble character?
10. Did he face troubles & hardships in preaching religion?
11. Did he confirm ethical and Social concerns?
12. Was he successful to establish his teachings?

In case of prophet Muhammad, along with other major prophets,
answers to all these questions are 'yes'. Complete life history of prophet Muhammad (sm) is well-known. He was born in a noble family, in lineage of biblical prophet Abraham. He received Qur'an, the revelation from God, which is still pure & unchanged.
He founded Islam, expanded his mission as a prophet, publicly preaching strict monotheism and warning of a Day of Judgment. His teachings conform with former prophets, basic beliefs such as oneness of God, Judgment day, Hell & Heaven, angels, other prophets etc. He performed some miracles by the will of Allah. Teachings & stories of former prophets such as Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus are found in Islam. Muhammad was indeed a man of noble character, well-known for his generosity, justice, modesty, patience, fulfillment of Promises, love and tolerance for mankind. To establish Islam, he faced tons of difficulties, threats and oppositions but in the end he was successful & winner.

His devouted life for Islam made it a major world religion in less than 500 years. So he was a prophet from God and a messenger
like Moses & Jesus.

In the case of Muhammad (peace be upon him), the true test is the Quran. It should pass the acid test and the criteria for truth. Revelation from a prophet of God should be available in its original form for scrutiny. It should not contain contradictions, corruptions, mistakes, interpolations and different versions. Scripture must not contradict Science. It should not contain myths and superstitions. It should contain fulfilled prophecies and its teachings should be rational and could be reasoned out by all unbiased individuals.

you must compare the Bible to the Koran since they follow similar prophets. Then check if they agree with eachother. Ex. in the bible the chosen people were the JEWS, yet the Koran doesn't respect their beliefs...you must look at what came first....

There are 124000 true Prophets of Allah 'GOD" and Mohammed (SAW) being the last of them all. And a muslim believes them to be a true Prophet because it is mentioned in the holy Quraan. And if you want to clarify any doubts regarding this, please read Quraan.
