What causes the popping sound is a bubble in the joint fluid popping. The actual popping of your back isn't actually harmful, but continiously doing it can make your vertebrae really loose and in the long run this could suck. Plus I've found that the more I crack and pop my back/neck etc. the more often I find I have to do it. I've been cracking my neck for years and now I have to crack my neck all the time in order to maintain full mobility, also I find my neck is a lot looser(in a bad way) than it used to be. So pretty much, its not a bad thing, but its not something you want to get into the habit of

like knuckles, fingers, etc, most people think it will cause arthritis when youre older. according to an article I read somewhere in a reader's digest, it actually releases something in your bones, and isn't harmful to you. it's perfectly fine, unless it hurts after you pop. then don't do it, and seek medical help.
