I'm having one this Wed. They have given me a pill to take before hand to calm my nerves. I will also have nitrus oxide, and novacane. They say it's painless these days, but I'm still scared. Also, how is nitrus oxide given? Are there tubes going into my nose? Is there pain after the procedure? Can someone answer these without being obnoxious? I would appreciate it a lot. Thanks

I have had many root canals with them just numbing my gums and never had any real pain. Don't worry.

Having a root canal is not as bad as it seems. Many dentists now offer the latest in laser guided technology which does make dental work pain free (Finally!)

The nitrous oxide is given via a mask which they will place over your nose and mouth, it smells kind of funny, but you will feel nice and relaxed and you will most likely fall asleep. I would take the sedative that the dentist gave you about an hour or two before your appointment to make sure that you are settled before your procedure.

Is there pain after? Sometimes there is discomfort, and occasionally pain that's a little more severe. The dentist will or should prescribe painkillers and antibiotics Be sure to take the entire dosage of antibiotic to make sure that you don't develop an infection. If your tooth was infected and this was the reason for the root canal, the pain from the infection is worse, much worse then the aftermath of the root canal.

You will be fine, take a deep breath and it will be over sooner than you think.

Good Luck to you and I hope this helps.

9 times out of 10, there is no pain once you are numb. SOMETIMES - if the tooth is 100% certified "dead," you wouldn't even need to be numb. Don't worry about it. Nitrous oxide is given through a mask that is placed over your nose. It's kind of like a rubber cup that is nose-shaped and it has rubbed hoses going into the side that will lay on your cheeks when you have the mask in place. There are no tubes actually going into your nose. Nitrous oxide is great in that it allows you to concentrate on something else, sort of like self-hypnosis. If you start thinking about your tooth, that will be all you think about, so try to pretend you are on a beach in Hawaii or something pleasant and it will work a lot better for you.

Well, I suppose it depends upon the dentist and your own tolerance, but if it helps, I can tell you about my own recent experience.

I had my first and only root canal a few months ago. And it didn't hurt. No actual pain. (I just had novociane.) But it wasn't fun. The procedure lasts a long time, and it's uncomfortable. They ran a (tiny but long) drill-bit far up into my tooth/root and then pulled it in & out multiple times. Again, no actual pain, but you can feel what's going on, and I sort of felt violated... I was glad when it was over. But it could have been a lot worse. I had heard that root canals were painful, so I was thankful that (in my case, at least), it wasn't.

The physical pain can be managed by having the area numbed, its very effective.

I have never had the nitrus oxide or novacane.

Afterwards its good to take some pain killers.

The financial pain is worse for me :)
