Most municipalities pay police officers a salary, not an hourly wage. It depends on the location. The information is public. Call the City Hall where you want to work and ask.

Well, considering the dangers they put themselves in everyday, it really isnt enough, in my opinion. I mean they are putting themselves out on the line, without any idea of what could happen that day or what kind of drug addict is going to try to kill them....or who hates their guts just for being in law enforcement and shoots....its such a scary thing..Cops get such a bad reputation, but I think of it as...well, if we DIDN'T have cops this place would be REALLY scary for everyone...I got a speeding ticket the other day, and altough I was NOT happy about it, when I really started thinking about it, I was like, well, it was for the best. If I had wrecked going as fast as I was...it would not have been good. I DEFINATELY learned my lesson...plus, the price wasnt pretty...

Anyways, sorry for rambling...my husband is interested in being a cop when he gets home from Iraq, and I think it is a very respecatble job if you arent afraid to do it. And to answer your question....cops around here (Arkansas) get paid salary...beginning salary ranges from $27,000-$41,000 USD/year, which is a BIG difference if you ask me....but I'm not sure what they go by to determine what kind of money you will be making. Also, when you get through with training and all that fun stuff, I think it goes up....I wish you the best.

Depends where they work...
The ones where I live make A LOT were talking upwards of $40 an hour straight time plus benefits. On the other hand there is a town a few miles away that makes minimum wage! So it can really vary from place to place.

Usually the officers in the larger departments make more than
departments with fewer officers. Large cities in the West pay
pretty good, while large cities in the South don't pay as well.
Pay isn't the only thing you take into consideration, the cost
of living is also something to think about.

Not enough, in my opinion. Neither do firefighters, paramedics, or school teachers. All of these public servants should have their salaries switched with the overblown checks celebrities get for making cinematic fluff.

(Don't get me wrong; I love a good movie as well as the next person. I just don't think the societal contribution is anywhere near on par with the aforementioned P.S.s)

It all depends on your tax base in your city or county. I have worked for Texas police departments from as low as $ 7.46 an hour to $ 11.76 an hour. Larger cities may pay more, but you also have to think of the price of living too.

It depends on the area. There is not an hourly wage though because it is a salary based job. The national average is $45,000 per year.
