I'm not a parent but if I was in my opinion I would make sure my child is reasponsible enough first to have that privilage. Like if she had good grades I would make it a reward for her. If she started abusing her privilage then I would cut her hours to a minimum, and only let her keep it if her grades stayed atleast at B level. I would want my child to strive for an A, but I think as long as she was above average then she would hopefully be smart enough to respect the fact that she is getting a cell phone in the first place.

I think it depends in the child.
Each child is different. Some being more mature than others.
Then I would taek into consideration how much time he or she spends on extracuricular activities.
It may also be good if he or she spends allot of time out and with friends.
That way there is no problem getting in touch with each other.
If he or she is a home body then it may senceless to spend the money. However most teens are not.
I know if I would have had a cell phone at even 14 I would have not gotten away with allot of the things I did.

If by getting a cell phone it also means generating a cell phone monthly bill, above and beyond the cost of merely possessing it, then an age of when you can afford to pay for your calling is fair. If the purpose of having the cell phone is not to be on it every day talking to friends, etc, and it's only for emergency or calling mom to have her pick you up from school, etc, then any age is okay. In the end, how your are perceived as being responsible and not one to make excuses, is a big determining factor.

I have a little sister who is 12 almost 13 and I think that since she babysits in the summer she should be able to get a cell phone, since my parents already have a plan. It is because she is starting to go to movies, dances, games, etc with friends, and I think its nice to be able to get ahold of her, or that she get ahold of her family for and need, but need to be responsible for the phone, as far as using only when absolutely needed.

Hi, i had my first cellphone when I was 11 yrs. old, I'm now 16..
it was given to me by my uncle, and my mom does'nt disagree with it.. She bought another one for me when I was 14, the one with camera.. the reason is for us to communicate because I'm always out of the house, and it is very useful.. just be sure that your daughter will be responsible to have one because there are some disadvantages in owning a phone.. my phone was snatched when I'm on my way home last year, it was terrible.. then after a month, my mom bought another one for me again and i promised her that i'll be more responsible.. she trusts me..

Cell phones should be given to your daughter so that she always has contact with you. You can always call and she can always call you. Ten dollars a month is worth it to know that she is safe........and if she isn't she can always get in touch with you or the police.

WHenever she's old enough to go to the mall with her friends without parental supervision, she is old enough to have a phone. I would say 13.

it depends on the girl herself..do a little test on her...give her a 'bonus' in her pocket money...see if she can handle it well...if she can spend wisely and still have change.. you should buy her a handphone...but make sure you pep-talk her first..i got mine when i was 16 and i'm 18 now...still havent had any problems since then except for emergencys...
