Perhaps you can volunteer at your local Humane Society/animal shelter so that you can learn how to care for your dog. They are always looking for volunteers, and it gives you plenty of exposure to different animals. Plus, its great community service!

And while you're at it, learn about the vaccinations that a dog does and does not need. Vets these days, are giving vaccinations that dogs do not need. Learn what the vaccines prevent and systoms of diseases. Be a smart consumer.
Current recommendations from the American Animal Hospital Association www.aahanet.org
And from Wisconsin University

If you have a Nintendo DS, get Nintendogs. Play with a virtual dog for a bit until you get the real thing.
Then again, that plan could backfire as why get a real dog when you got a fake one right there?

think of a breed of dog that you'll get by that time...
make preparations.. like arranging your room that the dog won't break anything.. when you were able to think about what breed you like.. search the net for it's likes and dislikes and its characteristics so that you can prepare things that would make the two of you bond.. like knowing what are its habits and other activities to do with the dog

Learn all you can about the different breeds and which one would be best for you and your environment then choose the best one for you and everything about that breed. Too many animals are abandoned after the owners become disappointed with their choices.
