Most Jews believe a man named Jesus existed. They don't believe he was the Messiah.
The Jews at that time were extremely ethnocentric. They called themselves The Chosen People and slaughtered or enslaved non-Jews in what used to be called Canaan.
Jesus was raised a Jew. He believed in God but not in this organized religion part of the Jewish lifestyle. He felt the Levite priesthood was rife with corruption. He did not agree that one type of people was superior to another type.
So, Jesus acted up. He preached love of all peoples. He preached that God will accept prayers anytime and from anyplace. He said giving money to the temple did not forgive a person's sins. Jesus started getting a huge following.
The huge following threatented the Levite priests, who arranged for him to be arrested by the Roman government who ruled this part of the world at that time. The Roman Governor in charge of the region, Pontious Pilate, is given credit for calling Jesus "king of the Jews" during the trial which eventually led to Jesus' cruxifiction.

Jewish people believe in the Old Testament only.
For Christians, the Old Testament serves as history to the coming of Christ. There are many books in the Old Testament that speak of the coming of a King, such as the book of Daniel.
For your information, there is a seperate group of Jewish Christians called, "Jews for Jesus. These are former Jewish people who have been 'born again' and believe in Christ.

Christians see him as king of the Jews because he was Jewish. Christians made him more than what his fellow Jews did.
