Depends where you're traveling from. From Hwy 80 or Interstate 5, get off at J street. You'll end up in dowtown. Old town is right behind you. Drive up and turn left and left again, like making a big U. You'll head towards the freeway bridge. Under it is the entrance to Old town. Amtrak will be to your right, right before you get to old town. Oh! My recommendation is to park at the Macys mall lot. Stay on J street, and a block ahead turn right into a downward sloped driveway into the Macys lot. Get your ticket validated (2-3 hour free parking) at any section in macys and walk out into downtown mall and to old town. (To your left) If you like mexican food I recommend La Teraza. It has a balcony view and the food is real good. Yum. As you go up the ramp just entering old town, go up the stairs that is to your right. Its on the 2nd floor.
As for farmers markets..there is Denios in Roseville. Except on fridays they don't have much produce and other stuff. Well probably about half of what they have on Saturdays. Which is A LOT!! So half is still good.
I recommend going to Old town for your day in Sacramento. Visit Old Town, Downtown Mall, State Capitol, and Museums. All within a one mile radius. Pretty cool huh!

Signs on the major freeways will take you to Old Sac which is next to the river near the downtown area. Be sure to visit the California Railway Museum which is in Old Sac. Lots of shopping, good food, train ride. The almond parking plant has a nice tour and samples not far away. You'd have to check on it. If the state capitol building is open for tours, it's beautiful. The Art museum is close by as well. Start early, it will be HOT.

Old Sacramento is by the river,
Its in between J and L streets, and its to the left side of I-5 (facing north)
You also might want to stop by Westfield Downtown plaza, shop for something from Sactown.
Sutter's fort is close by, take L street
If you're going to be there late August, might as well check out the state fair..,

You should visit Old Sac/downtown area. Some great places to go are: the state Capitol, Railroad Museum, Crocker Art Museum, Sutter's Fort, etc. Also, while in the area, you should visit Folsom's Sutter Street and the Folsom Lake SRA. The American River is also a fun option, for there is great scenery, hiking, fishing, boating, etc.

Sutter's Fort is interesting to visit, as well as the California State Railroad Museum. Here's a good website for finding information on places to visit: http://www.cityofsacramento.org/visiting_sac.htm#visitsac
Have fun!
