it is indeed, a type of wax and a type of oil. and do yourself a favor, dont break one of them. i worked at a spencer gifts for a long time, and every now and them some knuckleheaded kid would knock one down and it would smash. it takes FOREVER to clean up that oil.

It's a type of wax.

It has to be slightly more dense than the liquid, then as it heats It melts, rises, then cools and moves downwards. The interesting thing to me is that it can get too hot OR too cold.. To hot the wax gathers at the top, too cold, is like when you turn it off, of course.

More interesting is that someone accidentally killed themselves with a lava lamp.. (see link)

It's pretty much oil and wax that are kept hot by the light bulb at the bottom of the lamp.In the liquid stage neither can combine so they kinda just float around.

You clearly misread the box...it's a "larva" lamp. Millions of hatching pupa just waiting for some curious kid like you to open up the bottle so they can suck of your face and multiply. Can we say "Armageddon"?

It's just a chunk of wax submerged in light oil.
