During the 20th Century. When my mother learned it it was

I pledge allegience to the flag and to the Republic for which is stands, one nation, individisble, with liberty and justice for all.

Individisble was added after the Civil war, it wasn't in there before that.

So this occured sometime in the first 40 or 50 years of the 20th century.

And most people DENY this happened!

I'm a Christian and I personally want God taken out of the Pledge, off the Money and out of the swearing in Ceremonies, because I think God's getting a bad rap because of some of our not so swift deeds!

It is a SIN to take God's name in Vain and We are doing that with our Pledge and other ceremonies.

And if Bush and the Moral Majority don't like it, close down GITMO and stop the abuse.

If you think that's Godly or the work of Jesus, then I need to become and Atheist!

The pledge was written by Francis Bellamy in 1892 and the original words were "I pledge allegiance to my flag the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible with liberty and justice for all." The words "Under God" werent added until 1954 by Congress. They were added because a religious group campaigned and won on the idea that they were needed to show that we were different from the "godless communists". This may sound silly, but this was during the time of MacCarthyism and everyone was terrified of the communists.
George Bush would be proud.....special interest groups spark changes based on groundless fears.....hopefully it will be removed soon.

In 1954, Congress after a campaign by the Knights of Columbus, added the words, 'under God,' to the Pledge. The Pledge was now both a patriotic oath and a public prayer.
