"Difficult" is a broad term. When compared to sedans and couples, they're bulkier, more top-heavy, and have a larger blind-spot. (SUV's were not originally designed to travel beyond the 50-60 mph mark). They're only difficult to drive if you're not aware of that. And yes, they have a much worse fuel efficiency than smaller cars.

I recently went from driving an '02 Chevy Impala to an '02 Ford Explorer. For the first couple days I thought I was going to run everyone else over!! Now I feel like I'm in a low-rider when I'm in any car...so, from my experience, it's not really difficult, although if you usually drive a car, it'll be a little different at first because you are further from the ground. Give it about a week to get used to it. And I can actually see more of my surroundings easier than in my Impala...minimal blind spots...maybe that's just my make and model. And of course SUVs get worse gas mileage...I get about 20 miles per gallon.

NO !
I have driven every thing from cars and bikes to suvs, vans, tow trucks, monster cars, box trucks, moving trucks, class B strait trucks ( no rigs yet ).
The trick is to try it and learn at your own speed.
If it makes you nervouse at all go to an empty parking lot to practice first. Also an empty field or dirt road may be good. Once you get the hang of it it's like driving anything else.
The biggest thing to get used to is how high up you are and the feeling of being as big as the whole road, but that will slowly go away as you get used to driving them.
Soon it will be like driving any car, big or small.

No harder than one of those storage locker box trucks. Just went through that last week to help one of my daughters move and she was afraid to drive it. The front was just like a typical Ford van with a big box on the back. You could not use the rear view mirror (I kept looking at it...duuu) but the side mirrors worked out great. She finally even drove it. They really are not much of a problem. I see these sweet young things driving around in their Hummer 2's all the time.

It all depends on how smart and talented you are. If you understand you are driving a big, heavy vehicle and act accordingly then, No they aren't difficult to drive. If you try to drive it the same way as a Mazda Miata, then you will get into trouble. Just paying attention to what you're doing is always a benefit.

It really depends on the one your driving. I personally don't like the way the Ford Explorer drives because it just feels so heavy on the road. I loved driving the Nissan Pathfinder Armada and the Lincoln Navigator, both of them are bigger suv's but they drive and handle like a car. I love them!!!
