The breed is supposed to like the water but whenever we take her to where she can swim she won't go in. Tried getting her to fetch a stick but no luck. Another dog showed up and went right in but that didn't help.

this should be a simple fix. get a kiddie pool from wal-mart or other store. fill it will water and you stand in there and call her in there. this would help the fear of water and when she is in there . say good girl or thats mommies good girl. play w/ her in the pool and in no time she will love the water. I did this w/ my lab and worked fine for him.

Have you tried going into the water yourself and calling her?
That IS odd. That breed usually loves the water so much, it's hard to get them out.

Maybe she will grow out of her fear of the water. You said she was only 6 months old?

I have a Lhasa Apso who HATES baths but when I moved into my new home a couple of months ago, she accidently fell in the pool. It was dark and it was the first time she had seen her new home. I didn't have time to turn on the patio or pool light. She didn't see it. I quickly flipped the pool light switch on and she swam to the steps, where I was calling her from.

I wanted to take the opportunity to teach her where to go, so she could get out.

She turned around and jumped back in!

She LOVES to swim! WHO KNEW?! She's 5 years old.

You might try throwing your dog in and making her swim back to you.

That's what I did with my other Lhasa Apso, who is only 1 year old.

Lo and behold Shakespeare(my other one), loved it as well! It didn't scare him at all.

Swimming Lhasa Apsos? Never heard of it!

I've had many dogs and NONE of them were EVER traumatized by being thrown in.

Dogs bodies are horizontal, so they are natural swimmers. The only reason why I did what I did and also in the past, was to teach them where to swim to get out, in the event, that they should accidently fall in.

My family has a cabin on the Illinois river and my parents had a pool when I was growing up.

If you can lift her try it. That SHOULD allay her fears, once they realize, they won't sink.

Get a friend to help you lift her.

She would thank you for it later, if she could.

I think once she has learned how good it makes her feel and how much fun it is, she will be jumping in on their own, in no time!

Mine always have.

Good Luck! The doggie needs to discover how much fun that is!

It's excellent excersize for them too!

I like ANDY3191's idea too. Try it! It isn't quite the same but... maybe it will help get her used to being in water.

I know it sounds mean, but seriously, for some dogs you have to pretty much throw them in. If it's water that will go over her head, some people put a long leash on them just in case and then throw them in. Dogs instinctivly know how to swim once they are in the water. Once you get her in the water she'll love it.

Try going in the water, you can also work on carrying her in a swallow part of the water and setting her down in in, telling her that its ok.. Just talking to her. Keep trying that for a spell. She may come around to going in. Play with her while you have her in the swallow part.. Good Luck..

Its a gender thing. Female dogs aren't into fetch and aren't as
fond of the water as male dogs.

If she comes to you willingly on land try going in the water just a little (where it's still shallow) and sit down and talk to her. when she come praise her and see if she'll go a little further keep the same idea. (she may just be scared of it but if you go in and sit and relax so will she)

buy it a designer swim suit and a claw proof floating device, then throw it out of a boat, gently of course and especially after a nice walk on the beach to show off it's swimsuit.
