If you speak to most Christians in their 70's or 80's, they would tell you Divorce isn't allowed unless the reason is adultery. Why?

Most older people in general come from a time where divorce just wasn't the normal. Divorce rates today are nearing 70%...However back in the 50's era divorce rates were under 2%. So naturally they would oppose the idea. There are only three legal ways to have a divorce...Adultery, Death, and "unreconsilable differences". I personally feel that the later is just a joke. People get married way to fast these days and thus need a cop-out to end their mistake. Older people never had such a problem and as such don't think that problem should exist today.

In the Bible, in the New Testament, Jesus said you are not to divorce your wife unless she has committed adultery. A lot of christians today still follow these rules. I think it is wonderful. There are too many marriages these days that end up in divorce because the couple does not allow God into their marriage and life. God does not recognize divorce for any other reason.

God hates divorce. He knows how devastating it is, especially when kids are involved. He also knows how selfish we are - that's why wedding vows state "for better or for worse." Love is a commitment to the welfare of the other person.

Other reasons listed for divorce are abandonment or refusal to accept the spouse's conversion to Christianity (1Corinthians 7:13). Many Christians feel that an abused spouse is not required to stay in a marriage, either - God hates oppression. All measures, including counseling, should be tried before divorce.

Many older Christians have reached that level of maturity where they have learned the arts of showing appreciation and also compromising.

The Bible says so. Matthew 5:32, 19:9. Also it is allowed if a lost spouse divorces a Christian, it is not the Christian's fault. I Cor. 7:15

The Bible tells us that the only reason for divorce is adultery. This is why we should be in love and not in lust with the one we choose to marry. Its not easy being married but if you love the one your with and you build your house on the rock and you live your lives the way Jesus told us to then you can go through anything together.

My Mother (70s) says, "I made my bed now I have to lay in it." meaning she made her choice, now she like it or not has to stay with it.
The Elders and young christians believe that once married, even if divorced, this is your eternal spouse.

I will say this that there is a multitude of enemies of marriage, and so if there is an older couple who has not divorced it's because they have stood the tests and storms and are reinforced.

Jesus said, "...whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another commits adultery " (Mt. 19:9).

He also said "...anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery" (Mt 5:32).
