I enjoy Paris, and I have often wondered about comments from people saying that it is a dirty city. I don't find it dirty at all. I think that it is a beautiful city. In fact I have found the country of France as a whole, clean and very pretty. The french people are not trashy. I have traveled very extensively, and have seen some trashy places. Paris is not one of them. I noticed a comment about dogpoo on the streets in another Paris question and answer. This may have been a big problem in the past because many french people have dogs, even if they live in small apartments, and these dogs are walked on the sidewalks. Paris now has a strict law that requires clean-up after your dogs. That is not to say that you will never see it, you will also see people driving through stop-signs. But it is less of a problem now than it was.

It depends on what you're used to. It is not as clean as some major cities (Singapore or Zurich for example) but cleaner than many American cities (New York or Detroit for example.) It's similar to San Francisco although the buildings are older and therefore show more affects of aging (including dark-staining where they haven't been cleaned for a while.)

I've been spending a lot of time in Bangalore, India lately (and I enjoy it a lot) and I can tell you that Paris looks like a hospital operating room when compared to Bangalore.

Generally Paris is clean. Some of the buildings show the effects of years of pollution, but in recent years a lot of buildings have been sandblasted, notably Notre Dame de Paris and St. Eustache. It's much cleaner than Washington, DC, for example. In addition to the regular garbage truck pickups, you have street sweepers who make regular rounds as well. But there is the problem of dog poo despite the signs that are posted asking people to pick up after their pets. Keep your eyes open.

I've seen the filthy canal waters and pigeon-filled square of Venice.
I've seen the graffitied walls of Rome.
I've seen the trashy streets of Amsterdam.

I never saw one out-of-place thing during my stay in Paris.

Although it has been improving over the years there is still an unfortunate tendency for Parisians to allow their dogs to "foul the footpath" and not to clean up after them.
