Do you (as a gay individual) have any pet peeves? Are there any assumptions that straight people make about gays as a whole that are completely untrue? What actions can I take today to help make a better future for you, your partner, and your children?

(P.S. I live in Ontario, Canada, which to my knowledge is a comparatively liberal area compared to the United States as a whole.)

I already treat them the same as every one else, but thanks for that input. I try to treat everyone fairly until I have good reason to do otherwise; so I treat someone with Down's syndrome the same way I treat a genius, and a gay person the same way I treat a straight person. It just makes sense. However, since I notice that as a theme, it has definitely helped me out.

And to those Christians who stuck their noses in here, I want to point out that i am Christian too, and I believe what Jesus said. His followers asked what the most important commandment was, and He responded: Love your God, and love others. How are you demonstrating love for others when you feel free to spread such hate in a public manner. Instead of picking on people who come here for support, I think you should read your bibles. You need Jesus' message more than most of these people.

The assumption that all we are is sexual beings is the worst. I am so much more that who I have sex with and how. I have a job, hope dreams and fears. I have biological family, chosen family and friends from all walks of life. I love, I hurt, I cry, I laugh. I am a whole person. I am an equal person to all other people. I do not want special treatment not do I wish to be beaten, abused or ignored.

Meet me. talk with me. not to my sexual organs.

What you can do is promote equality by not worrying about someones sexual orientation unless you intend to have sex with them and let the world see, by your example, that we are real every day people.

Thanks for caring, thanks for asking.

THere is an MCC in Toronto if you are in the area drop in and get to know the butiful people that worship the God of their and all creation there.

Well, for misconceptions you need look no further than these answers. This may not be the best method, but probably the best thing you can do to start with is what you're trying: get educated.
Personally, there's not much that I EXPECT of anyone else, so...it all depends on how involved you want to be. If you've got friends and you're just curious, then...just be a good friend.
Beyond that, if you want to get really serious about it, then you need to learn what heterosexual privelidge is, and you need to not be afraid of losing yours. (I did say I don't expect too much, but I do find it ridiculous when someone expects sympathy from me for losing the privelidge that I don't have to start with; I guess that might be my pet peeve. Either learn to accept that some people MIGHT think you're queer, and learn to deal with that approprately, or else don't go to queer events). Be our ears when we're not there, like people said. Correct your other friends and coworkers. I'm not familiar with Canadian law, so I don't know entirely what needs fixing up there (marriage is NOT tantamount to gay equality), but I guess that's all a part of the getting educated thing. That's all I got off the top of my head.

Support them?? They almost dispise straights, especially if you are Conservative.
Pray for them is the best way to support them. Pray for them to realize that it is un-natural to be gay and that they should repent. If they don't, just keep praying and move on...

For the one who said leave them along, or let them be. The gay community has invited this by forcing me to teach my kids about the homosexual lifestyles and the Bibles answers to it.
If they would not be demanding to take over marriage instead or maybe a union or whatever they want to call it, and making us take God out of the Schools and all, I wouldn't care.

We do live in one of the best countries for gays and lesbians. I am straight but quite a few of my friends are lesbian and I publically hang out with them. If people make comments about them I just state that they have the right to live their own lives and people shouldn't judge them. We need to help the gay and lesbian communities to help fight the government about overturning same-sex marriages. We should make sure that gays and lesbians get the same rights and privileges that hetrosexuals do and are not discriminated against.

good on ya girl for being so accepting, if only America would get its head out of its butt and wake up then perhaps the bigotry would stop.
Anyhow i wish they would touch on homosexuality in schools so people can have a slight understanding about us. example today i work in a newsagents and the paperboys were talking with me and they said things like so when did you decide to be gay, why dont you find boobs attractive etc etc they just have no clue!

First of all, I can't stand straights who think all gay people hate them. I only hate ignorance.
Sweety, just be yourself, have fun, be friends. Don'y make it, your gay and I'm straight, so how should I act. There is no reason to be different, thats is unless you usually say offensive things about gays. Go to pride days with us. Or if someone yells out "******" or "carpet muncher" hit them in the face.

The best way of supporting the gay community is to be accepting of its, and to challenge homophobia and discrimination whenever it occurs. When homophobes say that being gay is wrong, or a disease; then remind them that modern psychology disprove this 35 years ago.

Don't use the words gay in a derogatory sense or the word fag ever....for example, "that movie was gay." How would you like it if somoeone used your community or name to describe a bad thing?

Treat them with the same respect you want for yourself and protect their rights the same way you'd protect anyone else's. Gays tell me that's what they're after....
