If you are pregnant or have a STD, there is no better time than "now" -- not necessarily meaning the middle of the night, but as soon as the two of you can get together to talk.
If the boyfriend is an adult and you are a child, or if the boyfriend is a step-father or adult care-giver, than you'd better do it NOW.
If the boyfriend is an age-appropriate friend/date type guy that you've been hanging around with after school and at ball games... I suppose you could bring him and the fact that he is an "ex" up in casual dinner table conversation just about any time.
However, if this guy was a "secret" sweetie that you intentionally hid from your mom, you might wonder why and try to think of ways that you could be a bit more "open" about your next relationship.
If you are an adult child and are not living at home, you might consider whether this guy was that important to you in your life and wonder whether it is necessary to discuss him at all. I think in that case, it's completely up to you. (Unless, of course you are pregnant.)

well sometimes u have to think of ur mom like ur mom but also a best friend because u can tell her anything and sh will understand bcuz shed went throught the same thing

Exactly: tell your mom what? She should kno when you date a guy. I mean, c'mon! All your girlfriends probably have been discussing him for months. Let your mom in on the loop - just an eensy bit.
