You learn Buddhism from scriptures.. & sermons by monks/Sangha (The ones who practice the way of the Dhamma(The teaching) & preaches to us)

Then they(Buddhists & Sangha) Meditate… Meditation is the ONLY way to attain Nirvana(Nirvana is end to suffering … end of the cycle of birth & death.. it is eternal peace..)

But mind you.. All meditation is not own by Buddhists alone…There are two main types of meditation … Namely

Samatha(Calming yr mind to a object or action)
Vidharshana/Vipassana ( Wisdome Meditation)

Only Vidharshana meditation is Preached Solely by Buddhas …
Samatha is preached too..
but it is the Vidharshana that takes u to Nirvana…
Samatha was, is & will be practiced buy all religions ….

Buddhists NEVER pray (well… at least the Theravada ones….
(Theravada is the way the Buddha taught the Dhamma..
Other variations like Mahayana/Zen they have added & taken away parts as they see fit & considered timely..…))

But Theravada Buddhists worship (The Tripple Gem)
The Buddha
The Dhamma
The Sangha..
out of compassion/out of Gratitude towards them…
But..do NOT pray…!!!

I suggest you listen to some Dhamma to get a better Idea..

P.S. : The way to become a buddhist is simple

you say …

Buddhan saranam gacchami - (I go to the Buddha for refuge.)
Dhamman saranam gacchami - (I go to the Dhamma for refuge.)
Sanghan saranam gacchami - (I go to the Sangha for refuge. )

Then you are there...

Then you practice the 5 precepts..
1. Panatipata veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
I undertake the precept to refrain from destroying living creatures.

2. Adinnadana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
I undertake the precept to refrain from taking that which is not given.

3. Kamesu micchacara veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
I undertake the precept to refrain from sexual misconduct.

4. Musavada veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
I undertake the precept to refrain from incorrect speech.

5. Suramerayamajja pamadatthana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
I undertake the precept to refrain from intoxicating drinks and drugs that cloud the mind and cause carelessness.

Then & then ONLY your meditation will give results….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Buddhism can be seen in 3 different ways. As a path, as a philosophy or as a religion. When people see buddhism as a way or philosophy, there is not much praying, usually just some meditation. There are many schools of buddhism some pray, some do not. Keep in mind most buddhist do not pray to a higher being, but chant or recite suttras to keep them on the path of right behavior and to avoid suffering. My day always begins with a 15 minute walking meditation and a 30 minute sitting meditation. I do not pray, but I try to read from buddhist scriptures daily.Different buddhist practice different ways, I hope this helps.

Yes , I do pray .

Although Buddhism speaks of self realisation and self eradication of karma , but, there are times when the karma that we have created in the past are simply too strong and too negative and affected me too seriously and I have suffered enough.

It is in these moments that I prayed to the Buddhas and Boddhisattvas .

They are to me enlightened and advanced beings , who are always there to offer compassion, wisdom and guidance on my path of spiritual practice.

I prayed to them for help, for guidance , for enlightenment and sometimes for miracles.

I am happy to say that many of my prayers are answered. :))

I am Budddist, and I do not pray. I meditate by concentrating on my breathing and my koan.
