Bangkok is really not dangerous, I lived there before for five months and I am moving back to teach English in September for a year. For a few days in Bangkok check out Wat Phra Kaew (Emerald Buddha) and the Grand Palace. Walk through Wat Pho to see the reclining Buddha. Wat Arun is also spectacular, though it's a bit aways from the other sights, however this is a good thing becuase it will let you hop on a ferry boat on the Chao Phraya. If you can make it there around sunset it's really breathtaking. Head into Chinatown to sheck out the crazy shops and stalls. One evening make sure to catch a Muay Thai match at Lumphini stadium. For more touristy detsinations visit Jim Thompson's House, Golden Mount and Wat Saket. For shopping head to the Lumphini Market at night or Siam Square at any point during the day. And at the end of all this make sure you get yourself a Thai Massage! If you're interested in checking out the Backpacker ghetto of Khao San road in Banglamphu you'll be able to find bootleg cd's, cheap souveneirs, and more counterfeit North Face packs than you can shake a stick at but Khao San is really a very acquired taste and may not be fun for you or your kids. A few out of the way places around Bangkok include Ayutthaya Historical Park (about an hour's drive north, buses run to and from Bangkok), the flower market, the floating market, and the monk's bowl village (all located outside the main city). Have a fantastice time. Thailand is amazing!!!

You can spend a day at Siam Paragon, the largest indoor marine aquarium in SE Asia. The kids can learn about marine life and conservation while you shop. There are other stuff for them too. If done early, cross over to MBK Centre. There there are plenty of stuff for kids to buy. You will take some time to walk around the place.
Another day activity can be done at the Rose Garden Aprime. This place has Elephant Show and Thai Cultural Dance show too. You can even add in lunch. You can contact the hotel travel dest for assistance in this. Another day gone.
Go visit the Floating Market at Damnoen Saduak. Then a river cruise to see Bangkok from the waters. Then top off with the Grand Palace visit and Vinmenek Mansion. Add in Safari World or Dusit Zoo. Or Siam Water World and you have your 3 days taken care of.

There are a bunch of excellent suggestions others have made here. I suggest you print them out and discuss them with your kids. You wont be able to see many things in 3 days so find the locations on a Bangkok map and figure that traffic moves very slow. Stay somewhere in the Succumbed district for shops and sites within easy walking. Bangkok was once a city of canals, one of my favorite places to bring teenagers is to hire a "long tail boat" at River City in Bangkok for a thrilling ride through the canal houses across the river.

There is a place called Safari World in Bangkok. It's like a zoo. Go early in the morning, around eight o'clock, when they have the orangutans. They let people actually hold them and play with them and feed them. I'm not sure about the times, so you might want to go very early or get a schedule beforehand.
There is also a dolphin show and a James Bond-like show (but it's all in Thai).

i agree that bangkok is not dangerous. if your kids are somewhat street smart, they'll be fine. don't let all these posts scare you. i have lived here for the last 4 years and find bangkok to be much safer than american cities... most people that live here will tell you the same. the best thing to do IMO is buy some sim cards for your mobile phones and just stay in touch through out the day. let them know what places are off limits and trust them a little.

1) Ancient City & Crocodile Farm (in vicinity on outskirts of Bangkok)
2) Siam Paragon, Asia's biggest new shopping mall. There's lots of stuff for everyone including Ocean World.
3) Chatuchak / Week-end Market (maybe the largest market in the world)

I read a response about hand cuffing your children to you, not a bad idea. Go on line and read about the red light district--anything is offered by both young boys and girls...Thailand is the prostitution capital of the world--sorry but it is true. However, shopping is great, crocodile farm and a river cruise. Thailand is the best place I have ever been. Bangkok is hot, humid and stinks in the summer.

RULES:
No tuk tuk tours ... You go wunds to lots of rip off jewel shops and dodgy tourist rip off agents...
2) dont get a taxi by a tourist spot/hotel... walk =down the road and INSIST ON THE METER OR PAY 5 TIMES THE PRICE
You are safe just likely to get scammed... And ONLY go to the TAT (tour agent) in the main (southern ... poss bangalumpa train station (something like that).... the big one upstairs NOT the ones around it.

THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS TO TAKE THEM TO THE TIGER TEMPLE IN KANCHANBANUI (WELL 30M MIN OUT OF IT)
This is a tiger sanctuary with hand reared tigers the you can play with (as long as over 11 too small the tigers may be ideas involving mint sauce)...
I was there and it was amazing hugging the sober well treated tigers and they can boast to their mates... take a video camera... not sure of the name in Thai Wat Suan or something

Trust me that will take some beating....
Give it a day and you can make your own way up... more adventure (take a bhat bus from kan.... )

Break dance competition with the thai kids... try and use the monorail or subway.
Oh and if we are talking teenage boys over 16... good luck of keeping them away from the gogo bars... they are safe...
the ping pong ones are not (ie big dudes wont let you out unless you hand over all your cash).
And search them after in case the lads brought ninja stars off a stall etc when you were not looking
Along with fake IDs...
Oh and be wise get lots off free hookie software in Koa San road...
AND MAKE SURE YOU EAT THAI STREET FOOD... YUM YUM...
OH AND very occasioanlly (more likely tourist areas) you can eat bugs

Bangkok is really quite safe, take them to the snake farm. It's educational AND they will get to have their photo taken with a huge python.
Chatuchak (sometimes spelled jatujack) Market will also impress them, go early on sunday morning ... it gets crowded

Stay with your kids always. Visit Grand Palace and the nearby temple since it is considered that you have not gone to Bangkok if you have not visited said places.
