Sukiyo- "I like you"

Aishiteru- "I love you"

the most common way to tell someone how you feel is by saying, すきだ。「suki da」 I like you. The literal phrase would be 愛してる「aishiteru」I love you But in Japan, "I love you" is not really a phrase you hear often. Japanese people don't like to throw the words around as much as we do in English. Instead, they prefer to shove love in actions rather than words. That is why it's not really a common phrase to hear, and instead they just say "I like you." (:

I'd just like to add... "I love you" is very rarely said even between couples.... The first response is technically correct, but is wrong in that no Japanese will ever say it that way. The second response is correct.

Ai Shiteiru.

(Ah-ee She-teh-ee-ru)

And the pronounciation of the "r" is incredibly hard. It's like the cross between a "l" and a "r" and it sounds like a "d" almost.

I hope this helps! =]
