Tongues, besides the usual meaning, languages ( Gen 10:5; Acts 2:4). The gift of tongues is a spiritual gift that comes with cautions and restrictions about it's use (1Cor 12-14). Speaking in tongues may refer to foreign language or a unique utterance understood only by God or with His help. (Acts 2:4-11, 1 Cor 14:1-33).

Well Chocolate, I have studied various languages and been a Christian since 1984. I tend to go to the more "fundamentalist" churches, but agredd to go to my ex-wife's church, which was a mix of Pentecostal and Free-Will Baptist. When they got in a row near the platform stage and began "speaking in tongues" I noticed something very interesting. There were some who got up there and did it just like it was expected of them. But there were also "beginners" and I noticed that the preacher ran around to all of them, concentrating on the beginners. He would position their hands, and talk with them, and it seemed they were trying so hard to fit in with those who were "speaking in tongues" more easily.
But the thing that really caught my attention was when the Preacher appeared to be coaching the beginnners in making the right words. Listening to them, I realised what they were speaking in. It wasn't multiple tongues. It was a series of repeated phrases in Hebrew!
It wasn't a variety of words....same phrases over and over again, and with no translaters....
According to the Bible, anyone that actually truthfully speaks in tongues will have two interpreters. The Bible does not condone the type of speaking in tongues that churches today promote.
The Devil is the master of confusion, and any church that promotes these "random" speaking in tongues sessions without 2 translators is only confusion, and misleading the church. But they do get their sense of joy and sense of spiritual grattitude...small trade for being misled and becoming ineffective as Christians in their original purpose...to seek out those who are not saved and try to bring them to the one true Lord for salvation!

As I understand speaking in toungues is very special in the Chirstian religion. When you speak in toungues you have a direct connection with God and you are speaking his message. Not everybody will understand. That is why when a pastor or a preacher prays in toungues there will always be a translator. Being able to preach or speak in toungues is a Spiritual Gift from God and not everybody can do it.

It is not a language, it is gibberish. In many cultures and religions, it is believed that by entering a trance-like state one becomes closer to the divine. Some do it by praying, some by spinning, some by dancing, some by starvation, some by drugs, and probably by a few ways I can not think of now or ever. It is all the same.

If you are referring to the Talking Heads album, it's in English (lol). Otherwise it is usually an unknown foreign language (xenoglossia), meaningless syllables, or utterance of an unknown mystical language; the utterances sometimes occur as part of religious worship (religious glossolalia).

See this site for a great explanation:
