Manhattan is very safe. Parts of it are safer than others: the parts that are well-lit (Greenwich Village, Times Square), parts that have a ton of people at all hours (TS, again), and parts that are upscale (The Village, downtown, midtown).
On the flip side, in these types of crowds it's very easy to pick pockets unnoticed. Make sure that you carry your purse with the strap across the chest and your wallet in your side pocket and not your back one.

Whoever told you that is full of lies. Manhatten is very safe. Like any city of course there are parts you should avoid but as someone who grew up in NY, and been to manhatten plenty of times, there is nothing to worry about

Manhattan is safe. New York City is a very, very big place and so it will appear to be more prone to crime, but what it is is numbers. A certain percentage of people are criminals, so there will appear to be more crime where there are a lot of people.

The City is safe. Small redneck towns can be frightening, but NYC is fine.
