What could they lie about? If the beliefs of a religion are all plain and simple and easily laid out, what could be lied about that could be concealed? If a religion conceals its beliefs, then yes they might be lying about certain things. Religion is more subjective than objective and deals with less verifiable fact than science does.
Just because christians don't live the way the bible says doesn't make them liars. Humans are not perfect, including christians. To turn the other cheek is different to defending what you believe. Jesus designed it to stop mindless retaliation which still goes on in the world today. Atheists who claim that there is no God, no absolute truth, and no morality, who then go and tell us how we 'should' live and the real liars. If there is no God they shouldn't care how other people live and shouldn't be making moral judgements. The only truthful atheists are the ones who show no respect for human life, ie communists and nazis.

Sometimes, they do. Others, they don't. Unlike almost everything that pertains human race, the ability to lie (or not) depends only on a sole individual.
When those people lie about religion-related stuff, they probably feel like they are using just another lie. It's not probably with the intent of converting the other person, but mostly about feeling like they tried their best. Sometimes, they may even think "In the future, they will thank me for this".

I don't lie & I wont try to convert you. I am a christian, not a certain religion, I believe in God & the KJV of the Bible. I do believe that ppl of any religion have the chance to make it into Heaven as long as they follow Gods word, the Bible. Not everyone lies I hope you don't truly think that. Have a great day & God bless.

Yes they do. It's in the Bible that Christians have to "Witness" to non-believers; and they get in the habit and can't stop. And, the preachers tell them to bring their friends and neighbors next Sunday. When they bring a guest, they get a lot of respect from the congregation. It's even better if your friend joins the church and starts putting money in the plate: or tithing would be even better. Somebody has to help make the payments on the preacher's big shiny new car.

Muslims regularly lie....they are taught to deceive intentionally to overcome the Jews and Christians. Muslim nations many times refude aid from Christians because they know they bring with them the Truth that can set Muslims free from the deception of Islam.
nevertheless, millions of Muslims are being converted to Christianity, even in spite of death threats from Muslims when they do so>
In fact, most Muslims fear the Christians because the Christiians are dedicated to speaking Truth.
Jesus said, "If you continue in my word, you shall know the truth and the Truth shall set you free."

The word of God is the truth. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. No man can enter into the kingdom of God, without going through Jesus.
John 3:16-18
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
only Gen 22:2
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

I have no doubt that some people may have lied in order to secure a convert or three. But remember; despite what the media likes to portray, virtually no one believes that they are truly evil.
That's what justification is for, to mitigate the circumstances of any event, lies included.

Do you mean like historically? Cuz, what they did then was to torture them until they lied and said they converted, then they killed them anyway.
Do you think people lie intentionally lie to themselves and convert into their religion in order to avoid facing difficult existential questions?

They also use violence, abuse, and blackmail.
Yes, blackmail. Remember the 2004 tsunami? In dozens of instances in the areas affected, extremists christian groups were caught saying, "We'll give you food, water and shelter IF you convert to christianity." But since those nations are strongly muslim, hindu, and buddhist, they refused to convert. The fascists christians left without giving help and supplies to those suffering. So much for the myths of "christian love" and "christian morality".

The question isn't whether or not it EVER happens-obviously in a subject as widely spread as religion, it's bound to happen eventually.
How common? That's probably close to impossible to answer.
I suspect less common than many on Yahoo! Answers would like to believe.
