I am curious why certain religions, more then others, tend to knock door to door to tell everyone about their faith and beliefs?
The local Jehovahs, CONSTANTLY knock on neighborhood doors and try to engage everyone in an hour long chat about how great their religion is. And that is fine! That is great. I feel if you love your religion, embrace it. But I don't get why they have to go to stranger's houses to try and get others to join them.
At least if I knew of Christians, Protestants, Jewish, Baptists, etc., coming to your door, I won't feel so confused. At least in my area, the knocking people are Jehovah's but in my old neighborhood they were Mormons. I have put up a sign in my front door's window saying " ATTENTION RELIGIONS! The Bible doesn't need door-to-door salesman, it sells itself!"
I'd like to hear from those that know the answer or at least have had other religions at their door (christians, catholic, etc.).

I said I didn't understand why they had to go door-to-door. I hung up the sign because I am the kind of person that can't just say no thanks and I always get roped into an hour long conversation, even if I am in the middle of something like dinner or a diaper change LOL. One time I was so nice and didn't realize I invited them to come back so we can have a "longer chat". I just can't say no. I am too much of a doormat. LOL

Jehova's Witnesses and Mormons are the only ones I've ever seen at my door. That's just part of their beliefs - they've chosen to interpret Scripture in such a manner that they believe their God demands that sort of service from them. Thank goodness most religious people don't think that's necessary.

I find it demeaning and insulting, frankly. When I was stationed near Baltimore in the Army, the Witnesses showed up so often, interrupting a number of activities I felt were essential, that I posted a sign on my door saying "Evangelists: Get Lost or Get Shot!" Would you believe some fool ignored the sign? When he saw the shotgun I was holding when I answered the door (I'd peeked out the side curtain to see who was there first), he nearly broke his neck trying to run down the steps and get outa there! I didn't transfer out of there for another year, but never was troubled by any more Bible thumpers at my door!

I wish I could tell you why Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses do that, I suppose it is their tradition to do so and is probably supported biblicly.

As Baptists, we don't tend to reach out to the community that way. We have bake-offs, carnivals, events of some sort that we invite the public to attend. The only time we visit with people at their home is if they come as a visitor and fill out a visitor card; then we take the time to pay them a small visit and welcome them personally. At least, they used to do it that way.

We were looking for a new church in our area once and went to a huge mega-church in West Houston. We went out to eat afterwards and by the time we got home, couldn't have been later than 2 pm, there was a gift bag from the church hanging on our door lol! Talk about efficient!

Sadly, even so-called "Christians" have learned so little in their churches that they often do not realize that the choice to go door-to-door is not made by Jehovah's Witnesses, but by the head of the Christian congregation, Christ Jesus.

The Scriptures indicate that Jesus personally instructed his disciples to go door-to-door. Although they are a relatively small religion, Jehovah's Witnesses clearly embody the most prominent global fulfillment of that Christian assignment. Frankly, you can call yourself a Christian all day long, but if you disregard the door-to-door preaching work, who are you really disregarding?

(Luke 10:1-17) After these things the Lord designated seventy others and sent them forth by twos in advance of him into every city and place to which he himself was going to come. 2 Then he began to say to them: “The harvest, indeed, is great, but the workers are few. Therefore beg the Master of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest. 3 Go forth. Look! I am sending you forth as lambs in among wolves. ...16 “He that listens to you listens to me too. And he that disregards you disregards me too. Moreover, he that disregards me disregards also him that sent me forth.”

While a few people in their territories may choose to disregard the preaching work, Jehovah's Witnesses could never disregard Jesus and the Almighty in that manner, as Luke 1:16 teaches. Instead, the evidence is clear that Jehovah's Witnesses are performing Christ's work and thus they are, in fact, the only true Christians today.

As true Christians, Jehovah's Witnesses work to please God and Christ rather than man or selves. It does not even matter if anyone listens to their message, since the bible foretold that many (such as the questioner) would not "put up with the healthful teaching". The Witnesses continue to preach because they value the bible's direction even more highly than a silly window slogan!

(Acts 5:42) Every day in the temple and from house to house they continued without letup teaching and declaring the good news about the Christ, Jesus.

(Acts 20:20) I did not hold back ...from teaching you publicly and from house to house

(2 Timothy 4:3-5) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching ...and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry.

Jesus had said once. Do not make money off of the name of the lord. Or somthing similar. If all they are doing is spreading the word, I think its fine, though annoying, but perfectly legal. I think its rather admirable acculacly. With the way America is, all corrupt and such.... (Do some reasearch on negativity in America and you'll know what I'm talking about if you don't already.) If someone can get someone to have faith, or a religion, that keeps the US one step away from falling face first into the hands of the corrupt.

Some religions are doing what they believe the Bible literally says, to "spread the good news (Jesus saved us)," and not doing so is sort of a sin (an offense against God). I suffer from the same Jehovah Witnesses, always coming around trying to convert me. They are good intentioned souls, but a little annoying. The simplest thing to do is to tell them in the nicest possible way you own beliefs, and to respect that by not coming around. Sometimes that still won't deter them; I think your sign is a good idea.

Jehovah's Witnesses are so worrisome that they were the only religion that Hitler gathered up and sent to concentration camps.

But, they're not the only ones,. The rest do it differently. I used to live in an apartment building that was full of Baptist retirees. I could not get in and out of the building without having to explain myself 2 or 3 times each day. First, they want to tell you how blessed they are because they woke up today. And, confused I'll say, "but I thought the idea was for you to die, go to heaven and sit at the right hand of God?" "young man, you need to make your peace with our savior Jesus Christ."

My own sweet sister, without asking me, had her preacher come to the hospital the day of my cancer surgery, to prostelitize to me. I was in so much pain, I didn't feel like talking to anyone, let alone a preacher trying to convert me. Needless to say, there was an explosion, which my sister should have anticipated.

Others will get you in a conversation; and before you know it, they're inviting you to attend church with them Sunday. And, they can't accept you saying, "I'm not interested." You have to insult them, when they start asking if you're too busy to ensure your place in Heaven.

The born again Christians will invite you out to dinner and a meeting, You're thinking dinner would be okay and maybe the meeting is probably one of those sales things. So, you go, and end up in a hall with maybe 40 people. They put you through prayers before dinner. Not short simple prayers, but long drawn out sermons. Talking in tongues and all manner of rituals. Then there's the raising of hands if you choose Jesus Christ as your personal savior. If you don't raise your hand, you're paired off with a real ear-bender for about an hour. At this point, you're ready to tell everybody to go to hell.

I have often wondered why they have to sell a good thing so hard. They're more worrisome than green flies. I think that they all feel compelled to "witness" to non-believers because, the Bible tells them so. Just like it tells them they have to tithe. Two things needed for the support of the church and God's interpreter (the preacher). If their preacher drives a new Mercedes and they've built a new church, they point to their accomplishment with pride. And, they're ready to go out and drag more sheep into the flock.

First of all Jesus is a perfect gentleman. He knocks at the door of your heart and waits for you to respond he does not try to force his way on you. They go door to door knocking because it is there way of witnessing. We are all to be witnesses however there are other was to witness and be ambassadors for Christ for example you are a witness in the way you carry yourself, your talk your actions the way you dress the conversations you participate in etc... People should know who and who's you are by how you present yourself. As a final comment no one religion is all right or all wrong God is so big the human mind can not fathom his vastness the word of God says he is coming back for one church without spot or wrinkle so as soon as we get it through our heads that no one religion has it all right or wrong but each magnifies a piece of God and his vastness we can come together with respect for each others views and opinions.

Jehovah Witnesses have to go knocking. Part of their training I guess. We don't get them out where we live. Redneck neighborhood. I think they'd get laughed at, or bulldogs sic'd on them.
I don't mind them though. I enjoy listening to people push their religion. It will never effect the faith I already have, and I like to study people anyway. Religion is always fascinating to discuss.

I know what you mean. They used to come to my door too. They are very well versed, I mean, they present a point, and then give the answers. They are trained to do this, and are sent out to do it. In some places it's against the law for them to do it, as it is here in Oklahoma.
Christianity has different ways of reaching people, thru prayer and living our lives, and sharing with people that we meet. Not intrusive I hope, at least I try not to be.

I am not a jehovah's witness but the bible does say to go forth and spread the good news. They are simply doing what their bible is telling them to do. Their Bible is not much different than most bibles, and every bible I have seen says something very similar.
