Dictionary.com says Christianity is "The Christian religion, founded on the life and teachings of Jesus"

Thus, Mormons are Christians by default. Anyone belonging to a faith that's founded on the teachings of Jesus Christ would be considered a Christian. Period. Any more semantic discussions needed?

So to answer the question, Mormons, AKA members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are one sect of Christianity. Established in the1800's by JOSEPH Smith, it follows the teachings of the Bible as well as a book believed to have been given by God and Jesus Christ to Joseph Smith that was translated to become the Book of Mormon. So yep, Mormons believe in the Bible. They also have the Book of Mormon. The messages of love and charity are both the same, though. Be good, lead a good life, etc. It differs from Catholic belief in many ways (as do all Protestant religions). One that was mentioned here is the idea of a trinity. Mormons believe that Jesus, God, and the Holy Ghost are three different beings vs. one all incompassing "GOD" figure. There are lots of eccentricities with the LDS faith, though the church is generally well respected and the people are generally considered by everyone I've met so far to be genuinly kind, pleasant, non-freaky people!

FYI, that panel somone mentioned would have to do with excomunication. No one would EVER be excommunicated (kicked out) for being raped. And if someone freaked for using the world bra in church then that lady had some serious probs and your friend should not feel bad! That was the lady's problem and not hers. How could you not say "bra" during CPR class? Weird.

Keep in mind, there's a difference between "THE CHURCH" and "THE OCCASIONAL WACKO YOU FIND THERE." That polygamist guy is a good example. He, incidentally, is NOT a memeber of the LDS church. Practicing polygamy, incesct, rape, etc. would AUTOMATICLY bring on the excommunication process.

From another Catholic that they tried to convert to Mormonism.

In a nutshell: The Angel Moroni came to earth and told Joseph Smith a bunch of stuff, and gave him some gold tablets that had some "new scriptures" written on it in a language that he had never seen before. He was given the ability to translate these tablets (with magic spectacles). He wrote down what they said, and went into the town to give the new scriptures to the people. He could not produce the tablets themselves, he lost them as well as his magic spectacles, and they have never been seen by anyone else and he no longer knew anything about the language that he had translated. He was tarred and feathered and run out of town. Somehow he convinced some people to follow him and he wrote the Book of Mormon. It is the Mormon version of a "continuation" of the Bible, because God didn't tell the Catholics everything (don't tell the Pope). They believe in the Bible, but the Book of Mormon is also considered to be the Word of God to them. It just has alot of discrepancies and downright inaccuracies in it. Check out the website.

Also, you know those guys that travel in twos, on bicycles, wearing shite shirts and ties??? THOSE are Mormons. They are supposed to spend 2 years trying to convert people to Mormonism. That's what those guys are about.

I think that they are misguided people and that God will not hold it against them, because they really try to be good. But some people will believe anything. Even Charles Manson had followers!

The website will show you what they believe and what the inaccuracies in their Book of Mormon are. If you remove the second m out of the word Mormon, what do you have??? Go to the website. You won't believe this!!

The Mormons are of the Latter Day Saints. I'm sure you've heard of them. There are a lot of ex-Mormons out there who flat-out hate the religion. I'm not a Mormon or ex-Mormon, but I know an ex-Mormon, and can't believe some of the things she went through. One thing, if a woman is raped, the woman is sent before a panel of men, and can be excommunicated from the church. My friend said the word "bra" when she was giving CPR classes to a group of Mormon girls, and one of the Mormon instructors got really really upset, because "bra" is apparently a bad word, even though you have to take it off before giving CPR.

Stuff like that is why they get razzed. But, that's all second-hand information, so I'd suggest getting an opinion from a Mormon.

It was a religion made up in the 19 century by a guy named John Smith

Look up "Mountain Medows Massacre" on google or wikipedia if you want to know why people "bag" on them

and BTW, catholics were responsible for some of the most horrific crimes during the Inquisition and colonial times, killing any "savage" that would not convert, and lets not forget the millions in Africa and around the world dying of AIDS because they belive the man in the silly hat that tells them not to wear condoms, so your religion is not so mellow either.

Mormonism is a fairly 'new' religion. I'm very leary of any religion that rewrites it's own 'bible' every few years. If you go back and look at the original doctrines of the church, you'll find that they've been greatly modified.

Mormonism was founded by Joseph Smith. Yet, you will find very few Mormons who actually follow the original doctrines as Joseph Smith laid them out. Multiple wives being a very big one. I don't understand how people can follow a religion when they do not even follow or believe in the practices of their 'prophet' Joseph Smith.

Mormons believe that they are gods or will be when they die and go to an unpopulated planet with their wives where they will copulate and populate and thereby become the god of that planet. Very complicate bunch.

I am an ex Catholic because I can't believe the stuff taught to me by the priests. I have an up to date Authorized Catechism that I can look things up and verify if it is official scoop.

It is important to realize that Mormons are NOT just another demonination in Christianity. Most main line orthodox Christian religions do NOT recognize Mormons as being Christian.

The major difference between them and the rest of Christianity is their view of Jesus. The do not believe that Jesus is God. The deny the Trinity. They believe he was a prophet.....

The correct name for the Mormons is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They were founded buy a gentleman name Jospeh Smith in the USA.....when the west was being settled, I dont have the exact dates. Jospeh Smith said he had a vision to settle out in Utah, that is why the whole state of Utah has a high Mormon population.

Just a rough sketch for you.

Mormons are a weird cult that rewrote the Bible to fit their agenda. they think that polygamy is a good idea and that if you're good enough then you'll get your own universe to rule over in the afterlife. They also think that Satan is Jesus's brother and a bunch of other outlandish nonsense like that.
They also wear weird magic underwear and don't drink caffiene.

The Salt Lake City Airport is the worst one to be stuck in because there are almost no Starbucks.
(Salt Lake City was founded by Mormons)

Mormons are another term for members of the Church of Latter Day Saints. (LDS). I do not believe them to be a denomination of Christianity because some VERY FUNDAMENTAL beliefs of Christianity differ in the LDS church. I do not agree, however, with you pigeon-holing any group of people--beliefs vary greatly among Catholics as well. And none of us have a right to call anyone a freak.

Well, it's funny... like bagging on Jews for their commandments ("Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal. Don't eat pork. God has spoken!" -Jon Stewart) or calling Jehovah's Witnesses a cult instead of a religion ("They sit in churches without windows. What else screams 'cult'?" -Chevy Chase) or making fun of any religion for that matter.

Seriously, mormons (or latter-day saints as they prefer their faith to be called, like Seven Day Adventists don't like being called Saturday Christians.) are a very accepting part of the evangelical family, with a strong focus on community generosity and assisting neighbors as well as family. Half of my friends are mormon in fact... (and obviously they have an excellent sense of humor if they put up with me.)
