The military does more than just make or go to war. They have to go to Toronto every once and a while and help with snow removal.

No offense but...are you high? Even Canada needs armed forces because the world will never be 100% hippified (any attempt to do so will only succed via mind control). Then again Canada's armed forces are so pathetic that any serious attack on them will triumph (Canada only has an air force with barely 150 aircraft, an army which will soon have no tanks, and a small navy of 4 subs and 20 or so ships). The only other good thing for Canada is that the vast territories are so cold and inhospitable that no one will ever seriously invade them.

Canada is not designated as a peace keeping country. We participate in peace keeping actions. How can you do this without a trained military?
Be careful. Our military (not sure of other countries....) do a hell of a lot more than killing. One of our guys is worth 3 of any other nation. Our guys are better trained and smarter than most. So our guys can help out during national crisis. Remember when the dykes broke in Manitoba. How long did it take us to react? Hours. What happened in Lousiana? A disaster. What happened when the ice storm hit Ontario and Quebec? We had things well in hand in hours because our military helped us out. What about the snow storms in Newfoundland and Toronto. Again our mililary moved in and helped us out.
When a fishing boat runs into trouble off the coast of Nova Scotia or Newfoundland who goes to save them? Search and Rescue. Who are they? Armed forces. So the next time you wonder why we have a military, watch how they react in a time of crisis. You should be lucky you live in a country where you have a good reason to feel proud about your military.
Don't badmouth our troops. They are cool guys, and are heros. Canadian troops are real heros.

Firstly, Canada has some of the best trained soldiers in the world (particularly pilots and communications specialists).
the military has it's uses, even in times of "peace"--it is the most effecient means of providing materials and skills to assist in cases of natural disaster, for instance, where a civilian force would be extremely cumbersome.
Secondly, if you wait until you need an army to recruit, train and equip a military force, then it's too late to do any good. As for peacekeeping, in modern terms that means keeping two (or more) belligerent, trigger-happy factions apart before they kill each other, and the only way to do that is to stick a heavily armed, well trained force in between them with permission to shoot anyone who threatens the peace. Simple as that.

Thats like saying why do the police carry guns. If you wanna keep the peace you must have a last resort to keep it. The US is a peace keeping country and it could make the arguement that invading Iraq kept the peace in the long run.

Its a waste of money no doubt about it. How bout those subs purchased from England that are defective?
In recent years Canadians have served to keep the "peace" in former Yugoslavia and Afghanistan.
Why do you live near a military base?

Did you know that Switzerland, which is supposed to be the most neutral and peaceful country has one of the most advanced and well trained armies? It is for defense, peaceful countries like yours make easy targets. I love Canada it should be a role model, especially for its violent neighbors.

Canada must have a military for homeland defense. It may be crazy to think that someone would invade Canada (joking Americans aside), but Canada needs to be prepared. Also, Canada uses its troops for peacekeeping missions. I think there are troops deployed to Afghanistan right now.
Also, doesn't Canada use its troops for natural disasters and potential riot control?

Even Sweden and Switzerland, who have kept out of every major war in the last two centuries have a military.
You may be neutral and peace loving but the people who threaten you may not be.
