it is semipermeable. the blood that carries the nutrients and oxygen, ect. goes from maternal blood vessel (mom's) and it is right next to fetal blood vessel (baby's). the blood doesn't normally mix unless its a special case. the walls of the blood vessels have "holes" that allow the molecules to pass back and forth, thus creating the exchange. not everything passes from mother to fetus this way. that's why its semipermeable.

The umbilical cord attatches the baby to the uterus via the placenta. After the baby is born, the placenta is expelled and the cord is cut. The placenta is discarded.

On the baby's end, the umbilical cord dries up and falls off. This leaves our belly buttons.

The umbilical cord does not terminate; it is attached to the placenta and the fetus and expelled during birth.

The umbilical cord contains two arteries (sometimes only one, especially in twins) and one vein and connect to veins and arteries in the babies' abdomens (obviously the abdomen ).

When the cord is cut, the lack of blood allows the umbilical stump to die. The remaining vein then connects the belly button to the liver! The arteries, I believe carry blood to (from?) the legs.(1)
