Opera is a fast brower. In some speed test it is the fastest browser. It also uses a different engine to display the content from a web page. It aims at being very standards compliant.
Opera usally the first with new features, and has email built into the browser. It is also available on many platforms, such as PC and cell phones, and will even be available on the Nintendo DS.
Opera is free for PCs and Macs, and some other platforms, but may cost money for other platforms.
Firefox is free, and you can get the source code to the browser, meaning you can make any changes you want. It also aims to be very standards compliant.
To match some of the functionality of Opera, you need to install extensions to Firefox, and Firefox does not include email. This however makes Firefox less cluttered and simpler. With extensions you can get more functionality than Opera.
Firefox is based off of the Mozilla Suite, which was based off of Netscape, which was codenamed Mozilla.

I personally have never tried Opera, so I won't speak about it.
I can tell you, however, that having used Mozilla for Debian Linux, Internet Explorer, Firefox and the old Netscape, I'm 100% sure that Firefox is the best of these four.
Tabbed browsing, live-feeds, aweasome security, extremely customizable, many options, automatic plug-in finder, automatic updater, and many more things. Firefox to me is for sure one of the better, if not the best, browsers out there. Everybody should try it.
Also, it has a cool name.

What is a brower? Opera browers wear boxers. Firefox browers wear speedos.

I hadn't heard about Opera until just yesterday and now I'm reading about it everywhere...... so I'm going to check it out. I do know it has to beat Firefox--i do love the tabs!

I just downloaded opera not long ago...I still like firefox better. I like the little 'go' button for the address bar, and opera doesn't have it....I dunno, I think I'm probably just used to having firefox.

There isn't any difference. They both suck. Use Internet Explorer like the rest of the world does.
