The ends need the most protection. As you apply the product, the majority will be left in your ends. Additionally, you don't want to weigh your hair down by starting at the top.

usually the ends of hair are the driest or need the most attention. If you apply it to ur roots first it might make it look a little oily. Putting it on the driest part of ur hair that doesnt get as much moisture from ur scalp will make it even out i guess.

With some products, the ends need it the most, because they are the oldest, most damaged hair. Also, if you start at the ends and work up, you are less likely to dump too much on your scalp. At least, that's my theory. When I condition my hair, I focus on the ends first and try to avoid putting much conditioner near my scalp. (Shampooing I do the other way, concentrating most on the scalp and roots.)

There's a very good reason, actually. You're ends are very porus and need more product on them. If you apply more to the roots (unless it's a root-lifter) you get greasy scalp. Best to liquify the product in your palms, start with the ends and work your way up.

Maybe because the hair structure, if you have ever seen a magnified picture, looks kind of scaly, and if you apply from the ends up, maybe it absorbs better into the hair shaft through all those microscopic layers.

Because gravity is going to take some of the dye down to the ends anyway and as you dye your hair again and again, the roots are what really needs the bulk of the dye.
