Debra, The columbine shooting happened before they took prayer out of schools and your fellow Christian "Bush" started the war.

You have no idea. My wife has been a teacher in the public school system for 7 years and it seems as if it gets worse every day. Now, my wife is a christian and i am an atheist, so we disagree on certain things. But you are making a decision based on internet searches. Do you have a child in the public school system. I don't mean this in a "well, you don't have the right to an opinion", sort of way but we have been doing everything in our power (and don't say - you could go private school, you should home school) we have done everything we can and (including both of those) still we seem to be constantly faced with the dilemma of how to best educate our kids. The public school system is hopeless right now. Private schools are a huge gamble. They still have a financial bottom line to protect. Some kids, like our oldest, will thrive being taught at home, and some, like our youngest, needs the comraderie that public school offers. There is no one answer. But you absolutely need to talk to all the public school teachers you can find and talk to them and find out the truth. I'm not making any argument concerning religion being in schools or not. That's irrelevant. Education is most important. Our kids are not receiving that. Please research what you are repeating thoroughly. Screw the internet. people can type anything.

Actually students are not improving but we did gain one thing. We now need police in many schools. As to the taking God our of the schools it was way before Columbine. This effort has been going on not just in schools but through out the nation for over 100 years. Look where we are now with broken families, children without fathers, crime, drugs. No its not all a direct result but its part of it, a big part. Also a study of history shows that where Christianity thrives very often liberty follows and then prosperity.. Then as it leaves so do the rest.

Are you serious????
I live near a public school where the average score of the 5th grade writing test was a 15 out of 100!!!!
Students in public schools, not christian private schools, are not improving. Instead of looking at statistics on the Internet go to a couple of real live public schools and see for yourself.
A couple of years ago I took English 1102 in college and half of the class could barely read. When an 18-20 year old pronounces 'sword' the same way it is spelled you know something is not right.

1950's - top problem in high schools
chewing gum in class
1990's - carrying weapons in school sounds like an improvement?
teen pregnancy increased threefold since 1950
crime rates have tripled, can't build prisons fast enough
divorce rate at 50%, was less than 25% before 1950
abortion mills have prevented 40 million babies from enjoying their life, all because people want personal rights.
Let me give you a bit of info to chew on:
There has not been one weapon that man has created in which he has NOT used during war. With nuclear weapons, should that scare the human race, knowing we created weapons that can destroy the earth 30 times over. What intelligence. Oh, let's build more.
John Lennon sang Imagine and a nut went and shot him.
Thanks for such a great place to live, can't wait to get to heaven.

Crime, violence, abortion, rape and drugs have gone through the roof since they removed prayer from the public schools....and that happened...not AFTER Columbine....but decades BEFORE.... Improved how? Knowing how to have sex is not an improvement....! Overall grades have also slipped drastically. How many high school graduates do you know who can't read a book, can't add a column of figures, can't balance a checkbook? It takes them a few years of roaming the streets before they figure it out and then they go back to school and learn what they refused to learn when they were there. Athiesm is not the answer... it is just man's idea of lack of accountability....if you think God does not exist then you don't have to answer to Him... But that does not mean He is not real... Its just your selfish idea to have your own way... If you don't believe in God, He still believes in you...and love you too!

Yeah right! That's why there has been so many shootings. You can say what you want, but if you look around you would see what our world is actually becoming of. Our children may be smarter (if you think) but they have no morals or self respect or respect for others. Yeah, Its just great that they are trying to do away with God all together-- and when that day does come, may God have mercy on everyone, because we will most definitely need it.

RE: Prior answer -- Dude, I live in Indiana...
Anyway, what's the metric? Against ourselves? Religion didn't impact education in the last 100 years more than segregation, 'closed session' deals that districts broke to keep poor kids out of urban districts (Los Angeles, anyone?) or the 'war on drugs' that Reagan started but we have yet to finish COMBINED.
For someone who is atheist, you're using ultimately dogmatic tactics that isn't going to prove hearts and minds more than stir up antipathy. If we shouldn't force religion on kids at school, why are you drawing the conclusion that education is forcing atheism on children rather than a theistic-neutral education that promotes neither christianity or atheism alike?

The only reason why they took religion out of school is because they didn't want children beating up eachother because of what they believed in. Kids are impressionable. Ok, look at it this way. Look at all the underaged pregnancies. Look at all the gay/lesbian disputes. Look at all the killing, murders, stealing, raping, drugs & alcohol abuse. If America were to have some type of belief... This world would be a better place if someone would stand up and say something about it. But who cares, the president dosen't care. After their second term, they don't have to pay taxes. Its all about money, nobody cares. It's sad, really...

Dude, I believe whole heartedly in separation of church and state, but most of the kids in public school come home from religious homes. Again, where are all these atheists that are supposed to be out there. They aren't in public schools in Iowa, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Virginia, or Oklahoma. Must be some other state I've never lived in.
End of story.

Yeah right! Unwed pregnancies, drug use, and violence have all been "improving" among the student populations in schools where it used to be a big deal if someone was smoking a cigarette in the boys room or chewing gum in the classroom but now they have metal detectors and under cover narcotics officers and stuff like that.
