Your example isn't a very clear one. "Not that hot" does not mean that they can't be pretty. Even when someone has a downright ugly face, they can have good legs. And you don't even have to say someone is pretty, because that's not the only compliment you can give them. People can be nice, generous, helpful, have good leadership qualities, be good mentors, good listening skills. There is so much more to people than looks. If you want to compliment a girl, but you also don't think she's pretty enough to honestly compliment her looks, compliment something else, as it comes up.

I would never say that you should lie, but I do think there are times when it's necessary, such as when you are asked a point blank, yes-or-no question about something to do with looks. Telling the point blank truth can hurt someone's self-esteem (think about the classic situation where a woman comes out in a pair of jeans and asks her husband, "Do I look fat in these?" when her butt looks horrid), and I think it's then ok to either avoid the question, skirt it with a partial answer, or as little bit of a lie as you can get by with.

In my opinion, falsehoods of any kind are unwarranted and rank
right up there with all the sins.

For instance, in your example, suppose that person was pleased
with your lie. Then overheard more than one make comments
about them totally opposite. Will they like you more for telling
them an untruth to make them feel better ... or will they like you
less for telling a lie and being dishonest.

Usually and alternative TRUTH can be provided that will
accomplish the same goal to boost their self esteem.

You lie to them .. you've done a disservice to that person
that can never be undone.

That's how I see it ......

Well, admittedly I'm an Atheist; but I used to be Catholic. So, for those who DO really believe all that, you have to follow the Commandments. The commandment is, technically, "Thou shalt not bare false witness against thy neighbor". This is commonly interpreted to mean "Thou shalt not lie." Truthfully, however, a more accurate interpretation would be, "Thou shalt not libel or slander." which is an entirely different thing than lying altogether. So, no. Regardless, it is NOT a sin to "lie".

There is no such thing as a white lie. A lie is a lie.
