A few years ago my husband traveled from San Francisco, CA to Chicago,IL on an Am track train. The trip took us about two and a half days. I personally loved it but my husband got bored pretty quickly. I do recommend that you each take your own blankets with you because they really crank the air up at night and then sell you really small scratchy blankets for $10.00 and they don't keep you warm. Have a great trip!!

Its ok.. Ive traveled only for about 4 hours.. Its better than a bus ! bring a couple pillows and maybe a cushy blanket. He may want to lay on the floor at your feet. He will want to lay down. the seats are stiff in the back. (depending on his age) bring enough to keep him busy, a snack kit is a must, change of clothes, and some simple hiegeine products for added comfort. Theres nothing like a cold towel to the face after the 8th hour.
You should be fine if you take those little extra special things into consideration.
Happy traveling.

I've rode from CT to FLA in coach and it was OK... The only thing that bothered me was people walking through the car all night and wondering if my wallet was safe. Other than that it was comfortable.
On the way back we got a private room in the sleeper... Much more private and you could sleep horizontal instead of upright...
All in all, Amtrak is a good deal what ever you do.

When I was younger, my mom took my brother and I to FL from OH on the Amtrack. There was a layover in Philly, so we went to the NJ Aquarium. It was ok I guess. I would probably appreciate it more now than I did back then. That was also a 2 day trip w/out a sleeper car....

I'd never used Amtrak, hopefully I would chance in the future. Travel by coach is another thing. You would have different experience.

I traveled from Richmond, VA to New York City.
On my return trip, we had to stop at DC and take a bus because a derailment had closed off the route.

I know a doctor that took the train from IL to someplace in California, said it was a nice long trip, they enjoyed it. Their train did manage to break down in the west and had to be replaced by another one.

Shell out the money and get a private room. It is way way way worth it. Plus, the food is 5 star and can be served to you in your room if you want.
