Theres no way to really prevent it. Actually not all people get poison ivy.Because you have to have a certain trait to make you allergic and not all people have it so theres a chance you might not be allergic. If you are however and you get it make sure to go to your doctor and they will prescribe you some kind of a cream to prevent it from itching and it will help it heal better becuase if you itch it then like itch another part of your body then that part of your body will also get.

Why why why is there so much confusion on poison ivy? First of all your first encounter with poison ivy doesn't produce a rash but how that you've encountered it you have antibodies and next time you are allergic so you will develop the rash. The rash is caused by the oil of the leaves (same for oak and sumac) being on the skin and that is where the rash develops. If you thoroughly wash the oil from the skin it cannot "spread". Anything that may have oil such as your clothes, objects or even pets and transmit the oil and "spread" it that way. If you have a mild case, OTC lotions, benadryl and cool cloths will help with the itching. If it is extensive, involves the face or genitals you need to see a doctor for a steroid that will help with the inflammation and reduce the itching. There is a vaccine that can be taken through the winter to help prevent severe allergic reactions and there is an OTC lotion called Ivy Block that can be used as well. The best thing to do is avoid the plants and wash the skin thoroughly as soon as possible.
