You might benefit from an RCIA course to refresh your knowledge of the RCC.

Most take their first communion at age 7 or 8 (I think, honestly I don't remember with 100% certainty), so you may want to talk to your parents to see if this happened. If it has, you should go to confession first - taking communion in a state of sin is a very serious sin called blasphemy.

Call your parish (or a parish that you wish to attend) and speak with the Director of Adult Formation or the Deacon. Either one will be able to answer your question with much more clarity.

For Catholics, the recieving of communion unites us with Christ and with the church as a whole, the WHOLE church, throughout history. If you are in your 20s and have not recieved communion, I assume you have not been to a Catholic church in quite awhile. Before you can recieve communion, you must go to confession (to a priest) and confess any mortal sins.
This is not to keep people away, but to help them to keep from separating themselves from Divine Grace through ignorance. This is because the church believes the host and wine are transformed by Christ into His body and blood. They are Truly and Substantially Christ, under the APPEARANCE of Bread and Wine. To recieve God in a state of Mortal Sin results not in Communion with Christ but rejection of Him.
Also, you need to understand that to recieve communion in the Catholic Church is to affirm your own belief in ALL that the church teaches about Faith and Morality, and in particular your belief in the presence of Christ in the Bread and Wine. If you do not know what the church teaches, you cannot affirm what the church teaches, so if that is the case, then yes, classes or study on your own would be appropriate.
I'd like to urge you to learn and live the Catholic Faith you were baptised into. God is present in the Eucharist, and to recieve him there is the greatest privilege we on earth can attain.

Take communion any time when it is available. You can even take communion at home. Read the bible, it will help you. Ask God for wisdom to understand the bible.

Go up and either stick your tongue out so the priest can put it on it or take the host and put it in your mouth.
